Poor mileage on almost new 2018 1.6 i-DTEC 6MT

So I'm getting what I think is pretty poor mileage on my 2018 1.6 diesel 6MT sedan. It's not chip tuned or anything, got it brand new in october. It has 6300 km on it.
Yesterday I drove 300km's and I got around 5.7l 100/km. In UK terms that's around 49.21 mpg.
Normally the average is around 5.9-6.3 when driving in town.
my driving style is fresh but not crazy at all, and even when i take it really slow it doesn't make a big difference.

I would guess that my average speed was 120 km/h on yesterdays drive.

Is this normal for the car? I was expecting a lot better from it to be honest. My old Golf 5 1.9 TDI from 2006 got around the same mileage, after having it chiptuned.
The car does get a lot of short trips in town. Could that affect it? Or is this completely normal and I'm just expecting too much?

Looking at specifiche italiane of the 18' Civic Sedans with 1.6L iDTEC Diesel 6MT, (120 hp/4000 rpm), it should be burning no more than 3.5 L/100km even in standard city driving. So maybe you are being much more spirited or shorter-tripped than the city standard of gas mileage. But if you get this mileage over a long trip there might be actually some issue.....otherwise your style must be a little bit more "fresh" or crazy than standard...

As always with fuel consumption the official numbers are very optimistic to say politely. Going by official Honda brochure for my country (Slovenia), the average (mixed) consumption for my 1.5 turbo should be 6.1l/100km. My actual average over 13k kilometers is 7.2l/100km (calculated by hand as the onboard computer is lying between 0.3 and 0.5l/100km) and I do 50% highway, 30% "country roads" (don't know the exact term for something that is neither a town or a highway) and 20% town driving.

The mixed consumption stated for the 1.6 diesel 6MT in the same brochure is 4.5 to 4.6l/100km.

I’m running the 1.6 I-DTEC 6MT in the UK and the mileage is averaging around 52 MPG over 20k

the weather will be a factor.

On a long run and can get into the early 60’s if I stick to motorway speeds.

the optimum speed is approx 58mph in 6th for best MPG, but that’s hard to achieve on a long journey.

If you reset once the car is warmed up, then you can get higher MPG, but that’s not realistic.

the original official MPG was 80.1 but then when it was retested using the new standard it’s meant to return 62 MPG which is about what I’ve achieved on a good run and when it’s warmer.

I suspect it comes down to driving style, constant speed and flatness of road your driving on.

you’ve also got to take into account the new emission standard it’s operating to and the fact it doesn’t required ad blu like a number of other diesels.

I think it’s just that the 1.5t is returning very impressive mileage, so makes the D look not so good as it’s always expected it was out do the petrol by a big margin.

anyhow, that’s my experience.

Thanks for your input. After reading and taking into account the inpurt here I believe I might not have a problem after all then. Also had a look at spritmonitor.de, and what the users report there is not that different from what I am getting. I probably shouldn't give it that many small (4km to work) trips, but hey.
Have a long drive (400kms) on thursday so looking forward to seeing how that goes.
I had a drive on some country roads yesterday speed around 70-85 km/h and actually got aorund 4,7 l/100km = 60 mpg. But that kind of trip happens rarely
I still find it quite impressive though, that my old Golf 5 1.9 tdi which was 14 years old got roughly around the same mileage, maybe a bit lower...

I think with all the emissions squeeze now, it’s becoming more difficult to get the super high mileage from diesels.

VW Group achieve it by slackening off the emissions removal, but not that genie is out of the bottle others are careful not to get caught the same.

I’ve heard reports that previous versions of this engine which have met a lower emissions standard achieve more MPG.

so I think it’s just unfortunate that due to the new emissions standards the car will achieve less.

but as you say, it doesn’t seem that anything is wrong with your vehicle.

Keep something in mind. Those mileage numbers published by auto manufacturers tend to be based on ideal conditions. All the things below can effect mileage:

Colder ambient temperatures
Wind
Hilly terrain
Bumpy or poorly paved roads
Excessive idling
Jack rabbit starts
Humidity
A/C use
Gas quality
Short trips (engine doesn't warm to normal operating temps)

I think the mileage is normal at these cold temperatures. But did you checked on the air pressure in the tires, if it's too low it can influence the mileage.

But maybe you're expecting a bit too much or you have to reduce your average speed. Those older Volkswagen Diesel engines were also pretty good in terms of mileage.

There are unfortunately only 76 Civic Diesel 6MT drivers but all together they have an average mileage of 5.05 l 100/km.
