Big Brake Kits & Wheel Sizing - What you need to know.

Hey all, this is an informative thread on what you need to go before you take the plunge for that fancy Big Brake Kit (BBK) for either aesthetic, and/or performance purposes. I had to do a ton of research to settle on the Genesis Coupe Brembo kit that I have on my Si to ensure that it would not only be compatible on the car, but also for the wheels that I wanted to fit over it. I get asked all the time if certain wheels will fit over a certain BBK, and the real answer is it depends! The only real way to find out is:

1. Having a Caliper template. Any manufacturer of a BBK should be able to provide you with a kit. If a retailer that you bought the kit from doesn't have the kit, then you can ask them to contact the manufacturer and source it for you. These paper cutout templates are placed behind the wheel and should provide you a visual on whether the Rotor and/or Caliper will clear your wheel's Hub, Spokes, or Barrel.
2. If you have a template but you don't have the wheels or brakes on hand then email the template to the wheel manufacturer, and they will be able to use software to model it and confirm fitment. They can also do it the more consumer way of cutting out the template and measuring it with the wheel that you are looking to purchase.
3. Tried and true test fit... I've had buddies bring over a single wheel to fit over my brakes. Some have cleared, some haven't.

Here's what I discovered in my hunt for the right wheel size for my Genesis Coupe BBK. Wheel size (diameter, width, offset) aren't always clear indicators of caliper clearance - many times it's the spoke profile that determines whether you will clear your BBK so that's what I want to discuss mostly in this first post, and I will reserve multiple follow-up posts for other topics.

Concave. Spokes look cool going inwards, but the inner side of the spokes are likely to contact the caliper's face which is protruding further out than your stock brakes.



Flat spokes are usually better for caliper clearance as their spokes don't meet the face of the calipers. Not always true however because wheel width, and offset also are big weighing factors that will determine if your wheel will clear.



Convex spoke wheels are generally the safest bet to go with if you're looking to add an aftermarket BBK to your 10th Gen Honda Civic. The Spokes protrude out, and will tend to clear any available BBK on the market for this vehicle, granted you got the Diameter, Width, and Offset right.
