Just got back from the dealership to have my oil changed and brakes serviced and I ended up needing new rear pads and rotors. It didn't occur to me at the time, but when I got home I dug up a receipt from november 2017 where I had my rear brakes and pads replaced (under warranty). This was 6400 miles ago.

How are my rear brakes already finished after only putting 6400 miles on them? I ended up calling them back after I found the receipt from 2 years ago and the service advisor told me because I don't drive the car much, the rear brakes are more prone to rusting out due to not getting enough use. Is this a legitimate reason for needing new brakes this soon or am I being bamboozled?

Ive seen it happen when i lived in Minnesota so i can only imagine its worse the farther north you go. But ive never seen it happen that suddenly. Maybe 15k miles if you dont drive it alot.

Down here in the south i haven't encountered this problem yet.

Yeah, I live in Ontario but even then I'm just driving around town so there's no way I can accumulate that much salt on my car. I wish I had remembered that I had already gotten them done 6400 miles earlier before I agreed to have them replaced. I would have immediately gone somewhere else for a 2nd opinion.

Did you notice any issue with the brakes? Normally, a little bit of rust is normal. It would have to rust a whole lot for it to be an issue.

They don't "rust out" - the rust causes the hollowed out rotor center to "grow" and warp and wear the pads down. In a high salt environment 2 - 3 years is about what we got on our Civic before the rear pads and rotors are kaput. Our '98 (front disk only) last about 8 years and you can hear the rust grinding off if the car sits for over a week.

Rotors will accumulate rust while sitting parked. Usually it grinds off when applying the brakes. Im near chicago, i have 85,000 miles on my EXT. I havent replaced front or rear pads yet.
Next time they tell you they need to be replaced, i would ask them to show me the damage.

6400 miles? That is not normal! My Lancer that is heavier being AWD and also smaller brakes would last around 30-33k. Rust is ok if the car is not drive for more than 2 weeks!

That's quite abnormal. I'm at 40k miles and my brakes are still going. I live in Pennsylvania so we get all that salt crap in the winter too. Someone is definitely paying for a night out on the town on your dime lol

Thanks for the replies, guys. I had a feeling I was being screwed. It's already done so I don't think there's much I can do but I definitely won't be going back there for anything related to brakes.
