The Si is considered the Civic's sedan/coupe performance variant so it gets a more powerful motor.

The new Civic Sport sedan/coupe is essentially a mild "sporty" appearance package based on the base Civic drivetrain.

Apples and oranges? Compare 2009 Si vs 2019 Si instead?

So honda want backwards lol
The 09 civic SI has a K20Z1 I believe and that has true VTEC ringing out the rpms to near if not 9000 RPM. And the 2016+ (FC2 sedan an coupes) have a K20C1 as there base model engine, making 158 HP and 128TQ from factory on the crank, or so they say. But the difference is as where your k20Z1 has a true VTEC platform, the FC2's K20C1 is with a what they call I-VTEC, but is actually a EI-VTEC( Efficiency Intelligent Variable Timing and Electronic lift Control).

What EI-VTEC does is kind the best of both world where its cammed for fuel efficiency then power. Plus it revs to only 6700 rpm and "VTEC" does not always kick in bro.

Honda went from a base 1.8 litre engine (r18) making 138hp/128t to a 2.0 litre engine (k20) making158hp/138t. Like that’s a major upgrade on a base engine and to have better fuel economy as well. Seems like a step forward to me.

Technology in the new 2.0 is miles better than the older K series, 29 mpg city, yuck.

The biggest difference is the old 2.0 had electronic lift control on both the intake and exhaust side. The new 2.0 is only on the intake side. This is probably the biggest reason the old 2.0 was able to rev so high compared to the new 2.0. The old 2.0 was able to get rid exhaust gases a lot faster which gave it more rpm range, therefore more top end power. But the new 2.0 still feels pretty good for what it is, plus very good mileage

The 2009 K20 was an i-VTEC "High Performance" engine tuned for power. The new one is a different engine tuned for maximum economy, and no i-VTEC. IRL, the 1.5T in regular, non-Si tune, approaches that 197hp, with more torque than the old 2.0Si engine, in the case of the 6MT Sport / Sport Touring Hatch. (Close to 200hp/200lb.ft torque). A regular 10G Civic Turbo is faster than a 9G Si (Stock vs Stock).

The new 2.0 is also an I-Vtec. They were both designed for fuel efficiency. That is the reason behind the I-Vtec design. It wasn’t to create a high performance engine. High performance was a byproduct of a fuel efficient system. That’s why at low speeds the Vtec is not engaged. It only engages at high rpm’s. That way you have fuel efficiency when putting around but also some good performance at high speeds.

Having had 2 K24 vehicles, I am cognizant of the purpose of i-VTEC. But in the Si case, like in the Acura RSX, that K20 was tuned for power as well as economy. The new K20 has been tuned and designed for further economy, as well as a lower cost...

No, they didn't go backwards. Different engines have different levels of hp and utilize their power differently. Just because it has less hp, doesn't mean it's lower quality.

I agree! Honda wouldn’t put there name on a piece of junk. That’s why they have such a good reputation. And we also got to remember that these are civics we are talking about. They are designed for fuel efficiency and longevity. They do a great job of getting good power out of such a small engine. In order to do this they make a very efficient motor. So in the NA motors they continue to use I-Vtec, while in the non I-Vtec they use turbos. Both systems help these small engines make decent power while maintaining mpg. These cars were never meant to be sports cars or muscle cars. I’m not bashing a civic, because I love my civics, but they are still civics.
