Sound was more pronounced on the way home, definitely sounds like the flutter of a motor when you're on the accelerator, not roadbed conditions. But I never heard it mixed with the sound of the exhaust prior to that bad shift.

However, when I got home to write this post I was reading that DI motors have a more pronounced pinging, which I do hear at idle. Maybe that's the sound coming through.

Before getting home, I brought it by my wife's uncle's house. He's been driving stick all his life. He said nothing sounded out of the ordinary.

I also let him test drive it afterward and he really opened it up like I haven't. Shifted once at 5500 rpm, and once at 6500 rpm, to try to get the sound to happen at higher speeds. I heard the rev limiter beep on that second shift. He backed off pretty quickly after that.

Definitely made me more worried, but if I understand it correctly, this car can handle 6500 rpm shifts going into 3rd. I just don't like the idea when it has just under 700 miles on it, and I don't intend to do it anytime soon.

Before I got to his house, I noticed a lot more play in the shifter than last week. It was stiff. I don't rest my hand on it at all, btw. Just normal break in?

The motor can handle 7k rpm without issue. Honda built in a buffer on the rev limiter. I really think you are hearing sounds that were always there, just heightened senses kicking in. From what you posted you are fine. Relax and enjoy your ride.

Does anyone know if the valve gear is fully mechanically linked to the crank or is there an electronic interface to tweek the valves?

The question is if the engine revs up due to a mechanical force like a down shift. If there is an electronic interface, how would it behave? Could it cause valve/piston head interference?

you'll be fine. I went from 5-2 instead of 5-4 at around 70 mph, caught it in a fraction of a second.. watched fuel trims and data logs for a week after and nothing is out of the ordinary. they're pretty tough little motors :)
Oh sweet Jesus I did the same I wasn't paying attention! I nearly turned my black seats brown thankfully it was only once and nothing has changed sound wise!

Not even redline. Nothing to worry about.
So, been a few days. Everything seems ok but the car feels a little sluggish in the lower gears, plus the shifter has a lot of play in it. It was really stiff last week.

Going to Honda so they can check it out. Something about the speed and aggression my wife's uncle achieved in 2nd gear doesn't feel right.

I forgot to mention, when he shifted from 2nd to 3rd at the 5500 rpm shift, it seemed like the antilock breaks kicked in because there were hard rumbles coming from the front wheels for a second or two, then everything smoothed out. I really don't know what that was. Wasn't the sound or feeling of gears grinding, definitely wheels.

Also, the wooshing air sound is getting louder. Sounds like it's coming through windshield vents, even with air system off.

All my other concerns have fallen by the wayside. The car is awesome and I feel fine driving it. My concerns are strictly about how my wife's uncle drove it. Had I known beforehand, I would have warned him not to be so rough.

This car is going to make more noises as it breaks in. Exhaust, transmission. Everything is getting warn in. Expect it to get louder. Based on what you told us, you havent done anything to the car it cant handle.

If what you did to your car was actually damaging to your vehical, Honda wouldnt be in business anymore.
