AWD confirmed by factory driver:

http://www.touringcartimes.com/2016/06/22/honda-could-switch-to-rear-wheel-drive-in-2017/

The Subaru Levorg GT as with all Subarus is four-wheel drive in its road-going configuration, but with four-wheel drive banned under the BTCC’s technical regulations, the team have had to configure the car as a rear-wheel drive car, which Neal explains is an option that has opened up for Honda with the upcoming tenth-generation Civic model.

“The next Civic is a four-wheel drive car so we can do it. OK, it doesn’t have a boxer engine, but we can do what they’ve done and we would just have to go rear-wheel drive with them, that’s what (TOCA) have pushed the formula into,” explained Neal.

I was going to say that maybe they have the hood scoop to direct some airflow onto the turbo for cooling. Then I realized the turbo on the K20c1 is mounted toward the front of the car anyway..... Not sure why that scoop is there.

EDIT: Re-watched the Video a couple of times. Funny that the engine sound changed a bit as he hit that patch of dirt with the left rear tire...

Considering he's been a factory Honda driver for like half a decade, he definitely knows what's at least being considered at Honda. Theres a lot on the surface as to why Honda would make this move. 1) The Civic shares it's platform with the next CR-V, which will definitely be available in all-wheel drive. 2) From what I understand from other forums, the Focus RS sells like hotcakes in the UK and the Type R is struggling to move units. It's hard to sell a car when the next guy has 50 more horsepower and a "drift mode". Say what you want about driving dynamics, but ultimately, this is a business. The U.S is supposed to be the main market for the next Type R, and if any nation gets anxiety over 0 to 60 times and the 'need' for all wheel drive, it's here. 3) For those unfamiliar with Honda Europe, they're heavily involved in touring car racing. They've been dominate for a couple of years now and I don't see them just backing down from this Subaru fight. Launch control in a Type R doesn't sound half bad now that I think about it...

Very wise words. What more was said in the interview is that the car is coming out January 2017, which is few monts after the standard hatchback (October).
The new Megane RS is also getting AWD and so is Leon Cupra (Seat has been seen already testing it on Ring). If Honda is not considering AWD, then it would mean they are the only ones left with FWD.

I don't for one second think that these scoops are fake or the three pipe exhaust is for looks. Outside of a few trim pieces like carbon fiber on the interior, I doubt much on the R will be for looks. The Civic R is designed to do one thing, and that is to go fast around a circuit.

To those hoping the R will be AWD, I don't believe that at all. For AWD, you need rear axles. There clearly aren't any rear axles on that car in the video.

I do believe that Honda is working on a AWD car, however. It was displayed last year and will be running today at Pikes Peak.

I wonder if there will be different trim levels of type R. Maybe not performance differences, but bells and whistles, like sensing, leather seats, led lights and wheels?
Definitely, and that's what I think we're seeing with the two different cars pictured here. Both the FN2 and FK2 have come in a standard Type R and a Type R GT that carries additional features. (Don't expect leather seats though!)

Good eye. Looks wise, there's a reason why people are designers and engineers, people forget that. I'm indifferent on whether this car is AWD or not. But Honda, if you're reading this...
Make a 4 door coupe lift-back based off the Civic. Give it all wheel drive. Call it "Integra". Watch the car world lose their minds.
