Stupid question maybe, but did they actually say the Civic concept they showed was riding on the new platform? I know it's supposed to preview the new look but did they just fit a new body on top of the existing chassis?
Honda didn't mention it I don't think, and if it was on the existing platform then Honda wouldn't share that info anyway. If only someone measured the wheelbase then we'd know.

The wheelbase on the concept was longer for sure. Whether that means it was on the next-gen platform dont know and not really important. The concept was to showcase the new design, not the new platform. There's usually some dummy powertrain and parts in the concepts anyway.

Then it was probably the new chassis, unless it was on the current Accord platform which is longer?

Doesn't really matter. Concepts are just to show styling and to gauge and pump up public reaction. I am most curious if the 3" longer wheelbase is true or not. Civic needs to stop growing bigger and bigger. At some point it's going to get so big it just can't be an enthusiast car anymore.

I'm pretty sure the 3 inch increase is happening, but i think it was for the purpose of shorter overhangs, which is ok with me. I'm hoping that length of the total car only increases by an inch or two. But i'd like to see the width increase by at least that much as well and lower the roof by an inch or so. Judging from the concept pictures with people standing next to the car, it definitely appears to have a lower roof height than the current car, even on those huge 20 inch wheels.

I actually did a ghost image comparison in photoshop of the current car and the concept using the wheels as size markers, the wheel base was definitely longer, but the length of the overall car was pretty close to the current (given that they stick to the concepts dimensions)

Honda Civic 10th gen Next Civic platform / chassis? comparison

Kind of hard to see, but if you look you can see the overall length of the car is almost identical while the wheel wells and tires are pushed closer to the ends of the car. You can also see how much the hood has been stretched back. I know this isn't 100% accurate, but it's at least an idea of what to expect.

3" longer wheelbase is a lot. I don't think it is significantly larger than the old one (maybe reduced overhangs?) but the longer wheelbase should improve its handling a bit, and it definitely improves legroom.
One can hope. I've been driving Civics since the very first generation (and the Honda 600 sedan before that) and they've always had enough room for a big gorilla in the driver's seat, but somewhere around the turn of the century Honda decided to give the middle finger to long-legged people. The other day I test drove an Accord hybrid (a full size car, for crying out loud!) and the first thing I did was try to move the seat back and it was back as far as it would go! Bah! Hondaed again!

Do they really need to increase it 3" just to decrease overhangs? that can be done without a longer wheelbase. I agree I hope it is wider and lower for a sportier look. Any chance you still have that ghost image comparison?

The photo in the original post is the ghost photo.

I'm not complaining about the three inches so long as it goes to rear legroom. I like my passengers to be comfortable during spirited drives :) Wider is welcome as well. Keep in mind the roofline might appear lower on the concept because the ride height has been lowered.

Anyone think there is any chance of a future platform built with an eye towards a RWD Civic?

Agreed. The Civic FWD formula has worked so well since the beginning so why change it. If Honda wanted to compete in the FR sports car space, they'd probably couple with another manufacturer to come up with a joint RWD platform, like Toyota has done with Subaru and BMW.
