Definitely decided not to install this. I’m either going to return it or resell it if they won’t accept a return.
would you share the reason for this decision? cost? labor? worry in voiding warranty etc?

good luck with the return

Man, it's nothing to do with the BMS staff. Ando, in particular, has been fantastic- He's super responsive and helpful. If you reach out to BMS in email about anything, they get right back to you.
I can see myself keeping this car longterm, and although I know the unit isn't supposed to be detectable, I'd rather take no risks while my warranty is still in effect.

Let me know if you decide to sell

have you decided to go with a flash tune? or have you just decided against tuning all together?

For now, I've decided against it all together. This car is so balanced and nice stock; it manages traction very well for a FWD. JB4 seems a good plan to keep warranty intact, but keeping the engine completely stock seems like an even better one. ;)

This might be a non issue now fellas. Check YouTube Hondata just released a video showing an instant jailbreak using the flash pro in the car. No more sending away the ecu.

Looks like it will still cost $250.
very true, so you will still be looking at $950 or so to get started. However, for those who were primarily concerned with down time this might sway the decision.

Also, Honda are way more killjoy about modifications..., so if it’s undetectable in this platform, it might be a good call.
You're being kind to Honda on this matter. I know that there are a handful of very reasonable Honda dealerships scattered around, but most of them, and Honda themselves, are absolute weenies about it. You don't have to do anything beyond just unlocking the ECU to violate your powertrain warranty. Though all the settings for the amazing traction control are readily available to anyone from Hondata, in a youtube video no less, we'll never see Honda offer an update flash to their ECU that begins to take advantage of the capabilities of their car or the ECU they put in it. If any of us unlocks the ECU just to put in the traction control with no increase in power, making the car safer to drive and preventing needless tire wear...poof, there goes your powertrain warranty.

I love my Type R, but if I'd known then what I know now about Honda and their service centers, I'd have bought something else. There are other manufacturers that far more reasonable about things.

Piggy-back tune all the way. Pay a whole lot less, get a little less performance increase, but also get to keep your warranty intact. With the future, potential advantages of CANbus support, looks like JB4!

Edit: Eh hem...except for $167 additional for Bluetooth and mobile app. That's absurd. Everything else that I've ever purchased from Hondata (for the '15 Si) on down has had Bluetooth capability built in, no additional charge. The most expensive app was $6.99. Obviously, BMS is extraordinarily proud.

Everything has miserable caveats. Yes, Hondata is far better performance-wise and option wise, as long as you have no care for or need of your powertrain warranty. You get, but get a whole lot less, from a JB4 piggy-back, but all said and done, it's well over half the full price of Hondata and the unlock. Add Hondata's extraordinary traction control and the ROI swings hard towards Hondata. Decisions, decisions...

You do have to buy the app, but BMS has a special right now where they will throw the Bluetooth adapter in for free. Go directly to their site for purchase.

They were patient, nice, and super easy to work with through my sale and return.

No longer free on their site. Add an additional $140 now to price of JB4. Not a good deal anymore!

I may consider the JB4 as I'm doing a PCA HPDE in Feb and would like the extra pull out of third and forth gear which helps immensely when your accelerating out of a apex and will also help me hang with the Mustangs and Corvettes.........maybe : ) I'll drive to the track, install the JB4 and then remove for the trip home, and really like that option. As for fuel I'll put 4 gallons of 93 + 1 gallon race fuel in my race cans Will also remove front strut pins and dial in 1.8 negitive camber, otherwise everything else will be stock. Should be a fun weekend, and the CTR turbo should love the cool air
