Let me thank everyone that has given valuable input. Still a tough decision as you all bring up good points. It seems like there's a quite a few of you that have had or know people that had an S2000 and ended up regretting selling it. I love the S2000 platform, I'm just not sure I love MY specific S2000. I didn't hunt for it for weeks and hand pick a cherry model. I test drove 3 locally, and picked the one with the lowest miles. Issue is that a bit modded when I got it. It's on lowering springs, has a header, cat, exhaust. I put on an intake and did some other light mods. It's a fantastic car and there are the special days I really love driving it. Since I don't really see myself tracking either the S2000 or Type R, getting a Type R may be a bit of a waste as some of you mention. I agree the Si makes a great daily and I'd likely be giving up some creature comforts for the Type R. Definitely a tough decision as there are pro/cons to both.

I'm really interested to see the 2020 Type R to see if there are any major changes. The addition of heated seats/change to 19" wheels would likely push me to the Type R. Either way, I'm going to wait a few months after the baby arrives to really figure out what is going to work best. Like someone mentioned, budgeting for new expenses will need to be taken into account with daycare and whatnot. That'll also be spring/early summer and would allow for the S2000 to bring max money if I do decide to sell.

Just FYI my 2020 type r is suppose to have a May build date and Iā€™m the first one for that new model. To delay it 6 over months vs fall arrival on 2020 model i thing there will be some changes and worth the wait but I donā€™t know if theyā€™ll be more like summer.

I do regret selling my s2kcr years ago but today the trd 86 /brz ts or the new MX-5 are better handling cars but doesnā€™t have a proper engines nor has that awesome shifter feel. I feel s2k was great for their time and has a collector car feel today and getting rid of it will be difficult even though the corning speed, steering feel, brakes on the type r being superior.

Had an s2k in the early 2000ā€™s. While I loved the car, I never missed it nor regret selling it. Well, I would probably keep every car and bike if I had the cash and the space...

Figure out what you need and can afford and fit a fun car into that equation.

A bit late to the party, but I figured I would chime in. I don't have a Type R yet, but I'm thinking 2020 or 2021.

I have owned two S2000's since 2014. Back in February, I sold my 2005 NFR that was lightly modded. I actually sold the NFR once before and ended up buying it back a year later because I missed it. After selling it AGAIN, I can say that I do still miss it during the sunny days, but I would 100000% rather have a Type R. My wife and I also recently had a baby (plus have a small dog) and the S2000 is an afterthought now. Being near Seattle, there just wouldn't have been much opportunity to enjoy the S2000 compared to the Type R. My currently daily driver is an electric car that I love, but definitely miss the itch of a manual sports car.

Funny enough, we also sold our 2017 Civic EX-L and I also had a older Civic Si that lasted seven months (fortunately made a profit on it). We went for a family SUV with the 2019 RDX and that has a 2.0T so I just pretend I'm in a big and heavy Type R haha.

Why not? I have a 17 month old and bought the Type R last December. I was in the same boat - originally looking at used S2000's then when I saw their price tag I leaned towards the Type R, given that the price difference was only around $10k for a brand new one and it has back seats. Car seat fits perfectly in the back, and won't need any large SUV's until I have another child and they are much older. It has everything you would need except some redundant safety and nice to have features that less sporty cars would have. No heated seats, but was never a deal breaker for me especially since they are cloth anyway.

Besides, you'll definitely save some garage space having one vehicle that scratches both the performance and practicality itch. I think the Type R offers the best balance out of all offerings in this price point.

I drove 3 S2000's from 2004 to 2017 including a Club Racer for 6 years. I would never sell my R for an S2000... the Type R is a better car.

Sorry for the dp, but just to clarify my previous comment - I had the choice of keeping my old 2014 Accord V6 while buying an S2000 to go with it so it's kind of similar to the decision you face. I decided instead to trade the Accord for the Type R.

So I just did this exact thing. Sold my 2004 s2000 and my wife sold her 2017 si. We purchased a type R and are starting a family. I miss my s2000. A lot. But Iā€™m happy to have a car I will use more often and be able to include my family in when the time comes. My s2000 turned into a garage queen.

That's quite an extraordinary statement, considering how many of my 86 friends sold their cars for s2000s after they really got into tracking.

When you are at the limits of grip you do NOT want to lose camber

lol 86 and miata never handled better than s2k.
S2000 is a superior vehicle out of the 3 mentioned

Appreciate the feedback! My line of thinking is that I've had the S2000 and done almost everything I'd want to do with it. Long roadtrip, fun back roads, group drives. Only thing I haven't done is autoX or tracking. I'd like to do that some day, but don't really want to get deep into another expensive hobby. If I get the Type R, I'll probably take it to an autoX or two, but that'd be about it.

If you haven't managed to get out to the track pre-baby, you probably won't post-baby, lol.

I don't mean to imply that no one can do it, obviously people do. But big chunks of time are hard to come by with a baby, so if you didn't do it before, it's a hard time to start!

Fully aware of that fact. Kind of why I've kicked around the idea of just keeping the Si for fuel economy and daily use and trade S2000 and Jeep in for a newer truck/suv for family hauling duties. Time will tell depending on what the 2020 Type R is like.

That's way too much to read to be honest....... I have a Type R as does a friend of mine with two small kids. It's essentially a Civic on steroids. Best of both worlds.
