I don't have any inside info, but I am a pro software goon.

What's probably happening is they're loading anything on the drive that ends in .bin so they don't have to try and parse files. They tell you to format it not because it's some special format (it's just bog standard FAT32) but because they want to make sure their update is the only .bin on there.

Plug the USB into your computer, delete all the files off it, then go from there. Should be just fine.

It's a computer, not a dark portal.
During a normal device update, the updater has access to the device configuration. The Honda update creates an image of the physical device that Garmin Express then updates. When you put the thumb drive in the car, it copies the entire image to the device. Your settings and logs are retained because they are stored separately.

Trying to get my update to work correctly, but the head unit fails, saying that there’s not enough memory on the device. I checked the detailed settings (no pic yet of that screen) and it says it has around 2.3 GB available — which seems stupidly low (what’s the total capacity? 2.4 GB?).
You need something like 16 or 32 gig device to do the update. Just get the biggest and fastest drive you can and be done. They’re like $20.

On the flip side, the Garmin software on the head unit side has been known to reliably shit the bed when updating off a 128 GB partition. 64 GB is dicey, 32 GB is mostly fine, 16 GB is golden. Hence all those instructions about partitioning USB sticks.
Remember, FAT32 was never designed for huge memory configurations. But modern versions of OS deal with them just fine.

I think my USB stick is 128 GB. It's friggin' huge. And it handled the map update just fine last year, too.

Memory on the stick itself isn't a problem, but digging into the car's settings says that there's barely 3 or 4GB total memory. The map update folder is something over 4 gigs by itself.

You're conflating random access, short term storage with solid state, long term storage.
So where do I find the total capacity in the car's tablet?

Update -- update complete. I found a 16GB stick, initialized it, loaded the update to it, and ran it in the car. I'll keep the 128GB for music and images, but I guess I'll hang onto this 16GB one for map updates.

If I take my car to my local, friendly dealer, won't they do this for me?

It depends. Technically, it’s your responsibility because you have data stored on it. They may at least ask or remind you. The biggest reason for not doing it is the length of time some updates require.

i do not work for a Honda dealer but we always do it as a courtesy if the customer says ok.

here’s the error that the system shows:

Any solution for this problem?

Have you tried clearing any stored tracks or routes?
As seen in the picture below it seems like the total volume is 2gb. The garmin map update is about 7gb. I do not know if there is something locked or not . Does anyone know if there is phisical sd card in the HU that we can change?

I have been unable to get the update to work. Last time I took the car in for an oil change I asked the dealer to do it. They said they don't have any flash drives and couldn't help me.

But did you remove the tracks and other stuff and try again?
