Why did you buy your Type-R?

Given your experience with current car, would you buy it again?

I know this is an old thread but would still have some value for those looking at a CTR. I've always owned sporty cars as a primary or secondary car (mostly second hand) and wanted a reliable sport car with decent power, warranty, daily drive-able, and can actually fit stuff (like my wife and two kids) in it.

Pffft - I'm asking too much no such car exists.... enter the FK8 CTR...it was an easy choice. Plus it's so cool to share my passion for import cars with my kids in this new era of automatic, electronic, cars are more appliances than cars time we live it.

Because it checks every box there is to check. As well as I'll never need Viagra while driving this beast....

I found out I was having a baby so I had to get change from my 2 door BRZ.

Figured i didnt have to compromise fun so I was in market between STi and Type-R.

R won, clearly :p

I'm probably one of the few that don't need the extra space the car comes with (if this car was a 2 door coupe it would've been perfect). I purchased based off of performance and reliability. I was actually cross shopping with this versus a used M2. And surprisingly, cost to own an M2 isn't much higher than the CTR, even though the buying price is a bit higher initially. I think the biggest cost for the M2 was depreciation, and you could mitigate that by going CPO.

There were two reasons I bought my Type R... one which was the highest priority was that I was tired of driving an automatic. I wanted to learn how to drive a manual transmission. The second reason was I wanted a fast, fun and daily drivable car that I could rip down back roads. I also wanted something that was unique and didnā€™t blend into traffic. I didnā€™t want to spend anything above $40K if possible either.

Based on those three things I had three choices... the Type R, the WRX STi and Focus RS. The Focus got eliminated quickly when I read that the ride quality was punishing and of the whole head gasket issue. So that left the Rex and R. I love Subaru so I thought the STi may have been it but the price was already a bit too high for me, not to mention there was a bit less utility. After doing lots of research I narrowed it down to a few things - one, perceived reliability, two, how easy the transmission was for a beginner, and three, the price. The Type R became the clear choice after a bit more research and I absolutely love my car. Yeah the manual transmission has not been at all smooth but 3 weeks or so into my ownership Iā€™m getting the hang of it, and I am loving it more and more when I see how hard a I can push it.

If the STi was still a hatchback I may have defected because I like hatches more than sedans personally, not to mention I love the look of the 5-door Impreza. The STi has a bit more in the creature comfort department and has the bonus of Subaruā€™s wicked AWD System... but itā€™s a sedan and to be honest the Honda just get right to me. :)
I like the way the e-brake looks, but that's the only thing I like about it. The fact that you have to press the brake pedal to release it really annoys me. It feels like driving an automatic that you have to press the brake to get it into gear. I know it will automatically release if you get in and put on your seatbelt, but I don't always do that before I want the car to move. The most annoying thing about it is (at least on my R) you have to press the pedal very firmly to get the e-brake to turn off. Almost every time I get in the car and press the brake, it won't deactivate until I press harder.
maybe it needs adjusting,

Why did I buy a Type R and would I buy it again? As the one-eyed pirate said, WoodenEye? Arrrrggh!!!

Real reason, if youā€™re not single or divorced, surely you can relate to #1:

1) Wife said go for it, the R that is, I made that mistake. My bad, and weā€™re banned from that Publix grocery store (cleanup in aisle 12!). I bought one pretty quick real close to MSRP in ATL Oct 1st, before she changed her mind.

2) Premium padded price no more. Local NW FL dealers want $7k-$$10k over MSRP still. Competition and volume in ATL meant I was only buying one car, not everyones that works at the dealership.

2) Features mentioned dozens of times already, modes that matter, reliability, versatility, capability, pick any ā€˜ityā€™ word. Sure Iā€™d like LKAS and radar cruise, but not if it slows me down A bigger gas tank would be nice but all models same, R only gets about 26 C-H split for me so shorter range than other Civics.

3) Stigma, looks, and ease of driving (rolled together as thereā€™s more to life than CivicX). So easy to drive fast or just feel like you are. Rev matching rocks as does short knob shifting. I have some street survival and track instruction under my belt (maybe thatā€™s why pants shrinking?) and the ease of operation and the go ahead, I got this in (dry) corners is incredible, begs to be pushed and the huge bolster hug you in place. Added benefit is the lower body strength and squats required to haul larger than average trunk junk over the bolsters, you kind of get on it like a saddle but you certainly feel in it securely. When my back hurts I go drive, feels better, theyā€™re that good even with only height, recline and slide adjustments.

- The thread starter dilemma was silly, of course he picked the still capable AWD STI as he lives in Poland with snow and would slam the lower Type R just getting in his garage, no question what would win to me.

3) The ā€˜bestestererā€™ reason to get a Type R that we owners probably canā€™t convey when asked is the SMILES per gallon. No matter what kind of day youā€™re having, this car (Civic by name but significantly different and so much better) will improve it, get your heart & lungs playing nicely together and sweeten each drive with RPM&M candy. Handling is subjective but well...as my dealership said, ā€œWe only let you test drive a Type R after financing is approved. So far no one test driving one has ever NOT bought it.ā€

This is bold and Iā€™ve driven lots of sports cars and even more Hondas... I think the ā€˜19 (w/knobs) Type R is Hondaā€™s best car ever!

My 370Z was getting old (2009) and the entire dash was starting to dissolve/sticky and separate from the metal underneath-damn Nissan.
So, looking around I initially wanted to get a 2009 or newer used 911. HAHA, any one I'd drive/be satisfied with was quite expensive, and no warranty....
Given the track record of 911 repairs I was naturally hesitant to pay what they were asking.
Then I discovered the Type R, I have had a few Hondas and they were all fantastically reliable and fun to drive.
At first I was looking around and most dealers here in Orlando area wanted up to 10K over. No way!
I had decided to keep the Z and get an Si for daily. I went to the dealer to get the Si and it had just been sold, and I saw the Pearl Grey Type R in the showroom with a 3K markup, so I got it.
Could I have shopped around and gotten it for less? Sure, but that was exactly the color I wanted and once I saw it I had to have it.
Got a good value on my Z and haven't looked back once.
I have to admit it's much more fun to drive than my Z was. I love it. Front wheel drive is taking some getting used to but it's different, not worse or better than rear drive...Plus I can rotate these tires! My Z was offset so no rotatey.
None of the online reviews are hype!

It was an easy call for me, this car reminds me of my RSX type S. I loved that car and expect to have this car for years.

I no longer wanted to baby my 99 integra GSR. Considered going Mustang because of the 40k target I had in mind. (30-something actually, but dealer mark up was really a shock) and 2 kids. And I like to track my vehicles. (Then I found out about the cooling issues...) still love it. I think Iā€™ll keep it for some time since I have a dedicated track car.

Because, you only live once.. my 2017 Si was great and truthfully all I needed. But, after a major life change I decided to be impulsive and trade in for the only Type-R in the area. I love it.

I nearly bought a 2019 GT or used Shelby GT-350 but wanted something a little more practical that would hold its resale value well and easily haul 4 people. The pre-2019 Shelbys have major engine failure issues and surprisingly dropped a lot in value, and it appears the manual GT Mustangs can be problematic. The Type R got my attention months ago from watching video reviews, and not really being a Honda fanboy or into small sports cars, I tried to shake off the mild fascination with this piece of engineering given the polarizing boy racer styling...but couldn't. Thought about the Veloster N...it had good reviews, but no one in the family liked it that much...plus questionable Hyundai quality versus Honda.

Wife said go with the Mustang, maybe even a good used 12-13 Boss 302, but the tech sucks in it, and I couldn't shake the R from my mind. A couple of test drives on $5-8K ADM CTRs was convincing in their quality, but the local dealers wouldn't budge below $40K, and I wasn't going to play the markup/gob of overpriced dealer installed accessories game (those cars are still sitting on the lot 5 months later). I spent a few months checking the car search engines for both the Boss and CTRs. Then, a nearly new, very-well cared for SGP car suddenly appeared at a nearby non-Honda dealership. It was the color I wanted, the wife liked it, and I bought it within a few hrs.

I can't believe the attention this car gets, wanted or not. I'd love to track it a few times, but its a still such a hoot to drive regardless, and to provide some relief to my trusty Gen 1 Ridgeline. Really appreciating the looks more and more. For <$35K it's pretty good bang/buck. Given I won't be driving it that much (maybe a couple thousand miles/yr), am debating whether to add AS tires to the 20" stock wheels or switch to 18s. Likely will keep drivetrain stock.

Shouldā€™ve came down south and shopped a little. I got one for $2k off MSRP $3k if you add the tax savings from the trade. I get it though. She was there. You were there. She let you inside her. You paid the tab...

Everything said here thus far......... and to say again, the attention. I get stopped in parking lots. A lot. I went to lunch with a buddy who drives a new McLaren and we parked near each other. For 2 hours we watched folks stopping by my car on the way in and out of the restaurant. I tugged at his chain all lunch long about how no one loved his car anymore! This thing is a beauty.
