Is the AC supposed to come on every time you turn on the HVAC system? It's really annoying.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this
Anytime you turn the HVAC on full auto, the air conditioner compressor runs. Doesn't matter if it's 30 degrees outside and you're trying to get heat.

I'm not sure exactly why they designed it this way, but it's a variable capacity compressor that will only work as hard as it needs to given the conditions.

I find it extremely useful when it's cold and humid, as I hate running the defrost/defog cycle constantly to keep the windows clear. By turning it on full auto it still has a dehumidifying effect but without running the AC compressor full blast.

Yeah, it's just annoying as hell that even when I turn the HVAC system off entirely after running it without the AC, the AC comes back on with the heater the next time I turn the system on. So annoying in a car with the worst infortainment lag ever. Mine literally takes like 5 seconds some times.

I don't even mean using the "full auto" feature. If I get in my car and turn the fan on (lets say I was previously only using the heater), the AC will automatically come on and then I have to turn it off.

It means my AC compressor always comes on when I turn on the heater even using just the fan button, then I have to go into the infotainment system and turn the AC off.

That's a bit odd. I noticed the AC going back into auto mode after being turned off but only once a week or less frequently. I hadn't tied it to any specific circumstance. I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if it happens when I turn the system off and on.

I think I should clear it up, I may have given you guys the wrong impression. If i'm using the heat without the AC and turn the heater off and immediately turn the heater back on, it works as it should. It's when I wait a long time or when I'm using the HVAC system for the first time after starting the car. Hope that clears it up a bit... I admit, I probably made it seem like it always happens.

That would bug me too no end. I went and played with mine, the ac doesnt come on at all unless deliberately turn it on. Or at least i couldn't trick it into turning on.

It's possible that it automatically turns on periodically like we've both noticed in order to keep all the AC system parts and seals lubricated and prevent it from degrading due to lack of use for long periods.

While that sounds logical, I'm talking like 90% of the time.

Yes, the infotainment system was the worst part of the car. My 9 year old Lexus has a better infotainment system. Although outdated, it turns on instantly, connects to my phone instantly and never looses the connection, streams flawless from my phone, and the touchscreen does not lag. I'm going to swap out the controller with a third party unit that modernizes it and adds Android auto ($800).

Other than that, I don't remember having the issue you are having. It would remember the last setting, and if I turned on the defroster the AC would be off. The only thing is it would turn the fan on full

The A/C may be turned on when the climate controls are in automated mode, or should turn on when you use the windshield defroster, but if you manually control them, you can just turn off the A/C in the climate menu. Regardless of whether or not you switch back and forth between auto and manual adjustments, the A/C status should always stay off when in manual mode if it was off beforehand. If it's still on in manual adjustment mode, go to the climate menu and check its status. If it's not showing either ON or OFF enabled, this is normal as well when returning to manual mode -- but tap OFF and listen for it to turn off.

If it does not turn off in manual mode when you select OFF in the climate menu, there is probably something wrong with the system.

That's not the issue.

We will be in fully manual mode with AC off, press the on/off button to shut off HVAC entirely or turn the car off, and upon turning HVAC back on or turning the car back on, all controls will be at the same setting except AC will have changed back to fully automated mode (where neither on nor off are shown as selected).

This does not happen to me as frequently as the OP, but I have noticed it every few days or every week or so in the summer when I manually turned off the AC to drive with the windows down every day. At first I thought maybe I had pressed the auto button but after several occurrences I determined the car was performing this change on it's own.

I haven't noticed this type of action from my 2020. It makes me wonder if it's a software bug. Have you asked the dealer if there is a software update? Is there a dedicated thread to this issue?
