In a similar thread here, titled "Civic Tye R at the track, the good and the bads," a recent poster says that removal of the aluminum belly pan, and the weather strip along the cowl, plus fully opening up the hood vent solves all heat soak issues, even on modded cars. Does anyone else have experience with this? I would not be inclined to open up the hood vent as that would expose the engine to direct rain, but...???
There is a guy who ran completely hoodless and it only gave him an additional 2 laps.

There are a lot of cooling mods out right now but the ones you will get the most out of will be oil coolers, radiators, and a opened up front grille. The rest of the mods IMO are not worth it. They will buy you a little track time but I strongly believe that funds can be better allocated elsewhere.

Right, I am totally stock, and I always overheat after 4-5 hot laps on a road circuit, if ambient temps go over 80 degrees. My only "mod" is running the heater full blast. I have a J's grill waiting to go in.

Further, even if the car doesn't go into limp mode, power is subtracted as it over heats. On a typical 80 degree day, my top speed at Putnam Park race track in Indiana is 122 mph. On a recent day there the temp was in the 40's and top speed was 128 mph, even though the cold weather meant I exited the turn before the straight abt 5 mph slower. As the day warmed up, I ended back at 122 mph.

It is a hoot to scare Porsches and Corvettes at the track with my red Honda grill badge on their bumper:). And it's a great car for street use. But after the weather turns warm, the car fades.

Even a vented hood? I was going to do that next funny enough the same hood you have and then add those track spec vents. Not worthwhile?

I think the vent directly above the turbo helps a little but it still pales in comparison to how much the front grille and extra radiators do. By the way, I have extra side vents for the hood if you need them. PM me buddy.

Would love to see what your extra rads look like. Did you go with a large oil cooler in the center and small rads behind both fog lights? Would love to see pics.

Got my swift springs and hawk brake pads installed today at the alignment shop...best $465 I ever spent. I was going to do it myself, but since they do all that stuff anyways I figured what the hell. I’ll bleed with Motul 600 this weekend in prep for its first track day the following Monday. I also got some Enkei’s with R71’s that will go on it. That’s all I’m spending til I figure out if this car will work or not. It’s sounding like, from this thread anyways, that there’s no way in hell this car will ever be able to be raced. Endurance anyways. Having said that, I still wish I didn’t buy it. I should’ve bought an already prepped E46 M3 and called it a day.

You mentioned extra radiators, how about just an upgraded radiator such as koyorad? Or do you think stock + second radiator? Or even upgraded radiator + secondary?

In your own personal opinion, of all the cooling mods, in what order would you put them in terms of most cooling.

Thanks again

New S58 has five nose-mounted heat exchangers—two engine-coolant radiators, two intercooler radiators, and an engine oil cooler.

This is where the world is going looks like.

I'm with you. If I knew that this car was going to be having this many issues, plenty of other cars out there I would have bought instead....

What's sad is that we're discovering more and more of these "bottlenecks". First was the overheating and then it was the fuel issue. Now we're trying to figure out tires, brakes, and tranny issues.... it never stops.

I like to start off with 29 in the fronts and 30 in the rear.

I usually keep the fronts about 1-2 psi lower. When I get off track and the tires are hot, I immediately air them down to 32-33.

The mishimoto secondary radiator is not worth it. I think the Koyo is a must.

There's a ton of cooling mods out there but i'll try to list to list them in the order of importance (first one being the most important).

1. Oil Cooler
2. Extra Radiators
3. Koyo Radiator
4. Water wetter
5. Front grille
6. Hood vent above the turbo
7. Turbo blanket
8. Exhaust wrap

After the 4th item, I'd say the rest of the mods only buys you a little bit more time on track.

Last but not least, pictures are up from our last track day. Car wasn't running right but at least the pictures turned out ok. haha.

I have a Koyo and was thinking of doing a vented hood and Js grille, I am on a stock tune so i am not as concerned but still would like to get more than 3 laps... how did you tie in small radiators and move the oil cooler to the middle ? it looks like a lot had to be removed....

I do not overheat per say but i lose a TON of power i would guess at least 8-10 mph on the straights if ambient temps are above 75 deg
