Dealer said my brakes need to be replaced next visit. Is this a realistic quote??

Took my car in yesterday for an oil change, new wiper inserts and to put my all season tires back on since the weather is far too cold for summer tires now. Dealer said my brakes have 3-4mm left on them and will need to be replaced next service visit.

He gave me quotes just so I knew what to expect. Are these REALLY that expensive?

Brake Rotors/Discs and Pads - Front - Replace - $871.95
Brake Rotors/Discs and Pads - Rear - Replace - $628.42

$1,783.50 in total before taxes. This is almost $2k for brakes.

Are these realistic prices? Is typical dealer markup thrown in there?

A quick google search for brake pads shows somewhere between 50-200$ for a set(so double-ish for 2), and changing them isn't any harder than a regular car (right?) I would say the dealer is full of it asking that much.

Based on prices from Hondapartsnow.com you're at about $750 for OEM rotors and pads for the front and rear, so they are quoting nearly a grand for labor.

You need to watch a few video's to really understand the level of anger you should feel when someone asks for that much money to change the pads on any car with performance brakes. I'm not exagerrating that you could swap the fronts, yoursef, in 30 minutes with a jack, jackstands, and some basic hand tools.

Laugh and get your hands dirty - all in you could do this yourself for a couple hundred bucks tops.

I'm super inept at DIY work. I don't know how to use any sort of tool, don't have a jack, jackstand, or anything of the sort. I could buy them, but the idea of someone who's completely inexperienced with this kind of work trying to do work on a car such as this seems like a terrible idea. I've watched plenty of Chrisfix videos but I can't ever muster the strength to try it myself.

Regarding replacements, I'm not exactly sure what of the three - rotors, discs and pads - actually need to be replaced and what doesn't. To that end I'm also unsure of aftermarket solutions. I checked Hondapartsnow as well to see what the going prices are and the dealer quote definitely seemed quite higher.

Go to a non-dealer mechanic, preferably one with good reviews.

Not joking, please go watch a Youtube on it -

-Decent jack - ~80 bucks
-Jack stand (you just need one as you do each side of the car one at a time) - $30 bucks
-Punch for cotter pins - $2 bucks
-Brake pad lube for shims - .30 cents
-Brake pads - $2-300 tops?

And all the tools you can use next time.

I'm serious, watch the video you will see this is no exagerration. It's a crazy easy job to tackle. If you're still intimidated, get involved with the local car scene and see if someone will tackle it with you it's an afternoon beer and pizza effort hyper low risk.

Watch videos on it, then decide. You'd be surprised how hard it is to fuck it up, and how easy it is to execute.

...and Dealers wonder where their derogatory names come from...a prime example.

While I'm normally all about DIY, I just want to point out that the electronic parking brake complicates the process for the rear brakes and adds a potential for costly mistakes if not done correctly. It's still not a huge deal and the information to do it correctly is certainly available, but it does add a pretty significant additional risk to what would usually be a very easy DIY.

Very unlikely that you need new rotors. Ask them what the thickness was next time. Look at the pads yourself - are they actually low? A lot of dealerships will indicate that pads "need to be changed" when they still have over 50% of life remaining.

Should be 2 hours of labor to replace the pads, so you're looking at $300 tops all-in.

Net parts cost is about $360-370, so they're charging you a pretty solid markup. Buy your parts yourself, and if you can't DIY, take it to an independent. Even at $100/hr for labor (and that's on the very high end for a Japanese Indy), you'll come out ~$1k cheaper than the dealership.

In this "analysis" printout they gave me it shows all 4 brakes (whatever that indicates) are at 3mm-4mm.

I agree that taking it to an independent mechanic (I have one 1 minute away who I've used multiple times already) is my best option after reading the responses here. That's a ridiculous markup I was quoted.
