So today I was going from 2nd gear to 3rd and I don't know what happened but I think I missed my 3rd gear shift.
I felt some grinding in my gearbox. I pressed the clutch down and accidently pushed my acceleration too because I panicked and the rpms shot up while it was in neutral causing the red lights on my dash to come on. Did I do any damage?
No check englne lights came on. I don't hear any knocks but now it seems like my car is slowing down while cruising on the highway when I'm not accelerating. If i'm going 70mph then it would drop 1mph every second.

Some cars record over-rev instances but I'm not sure about the Civic. If not, I would just take it to the dealer under warranty.

Sounds like you just mis shifted missing 3rd and revved the motor until the shift indicator light came on.

An over rev occurs when you miss a down shift, usually from 5th to 2nd and dump the clutch. Things go boom then

Believe me if you over revved it you’d know it!

The Civic would record the over rev and nope that wouldn’t be warranty. That would be 100% on the nut between the wheel and the seat.....

Sounds like you just revved it high. Is there a shift indicator in the

Yes I think I just missed my shift and kept revving until the indicator light came on.

Did I do any serious damage?

Should I go get a compression test?

I'm getting all paranoid now lol

Yep, that was my point - if it doesn't record it, take it in for warranty. If it does, better start saving!

you didn't hurt it.
holding it wide open untill the dash flashes the red lights is a daily occurance in my car.
90k doesn't lie.

down shifting and forcing the rpm's way over red line however is a walk home offence. it will tend to start chucking important parts all over the road when that happens.

Nah, sounds like you are ok. It happens. Grinded the shit out of my 2nd gear the other day in my R and was sooooo pissed at myself.
Slow down, be smooth..... smooth is always faster

Considering the fact you were in neutral I wouldn't worry about it.

No motor shrugs off an over-rev! Respectfully, it appears you are confusing it with simply revving up the motor.

An over rev occurs when the car is travelling at a speed greater than the gear its in forcing the motor to “over rev” beyond its maximum RPM.

This often occurs when downshifting from 5th, looking for 4th, but instead the driver finds 2nd. Likely a very violent next few seconds before things get noisy and then quiet as you wait for the tow truck. :)

You didn't over-rev the engine. You messed up on an upshift and grinded a gear. It's embarrassing but it has happened to all of us. You're fine.

In college I had a 1987 Nissan 200SX (loved that car!). I was downshifting to exit the freeway and I missed my 5th to 3rd shift, and instead went 5th to 1st at prob 50-ish mph. Oopsie, that didn't sound good. Had the presence of mind to shift back into a more appropriate gear pretty quickly, and luckily had no permanent damage. We've all done it at least once, I bet.

Side note, cool fact about the Type R is that outiside of the obvious perfect downshifts, thre rev match feature offers the added benefit of giving you an early warning if you select the wrong gear on a downshift before you release the clutch.

I honestly didn’t think I would like auto rev matching but it’s soooooo nice to never bog a down shift. It reminds me of the first time I fitted my race bike with a slipper clutch. I focused more on going fast vs performing the perfect downshift.
