Has anyone had their 2017 Type R appraised at Carmax?

I was rear ended a little over 2 months ago, and I am working on putting together my dimensioned value claim with the the insurance company. I had an appraisal of my car after the accident, but it would be really helpful if I could get my hands on an appraisal of a 2017 Type R that wasn't in an accident. Has anyone had this done who would be willing to send me a copy of their appraisal?

I would even be willing to pay someone to go and take their car to Carmax for an appraisal.

Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Carmax is where you go when you want an appraisal on your car that will make you laugh, and keep the car. Never worth the effort imo - their entire business model is based on paying the least possible for distressed owners, then turning around and selling the car for reasonable. Every quote I've ever gotten from them hasn't been worth the paper it's printed on.

Exactly. I have only had one experience with Carmax. They offered me $22k for a vehicle that I ultimately sold for $28.5k, and we know they would have asked for more.

Yeah I went there knowing that they would give me the lowest quote possible. I have zero intention of selling my car. I am just trying to put together a case that proves my car has lost value due to it being in an accident. So even if they consistently appraise lower than market value, if my car is appraised 2k less by them simply because it was in an accident, that would be useful information to me.

I’d go through Carvana if you don’t want to go private party. That’s what I did.

Hopefully he has better luck than me! Quoted at $23.9K with -$2.7k coming off due to the presence of an accident.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. Like I said though, I am not selling the car. I am just working on gathering information for my Diminished Value Claim.

If anyone with a 2017 Type R with around 20,000 miles, that hasn't been in an accident wants to make $50 bucks to take their car to Carmax to get it appraised and send me a copy of their appraisal let me know.

CarMax was on point with what other dealers were were offering me $13.4k-$14k. However with the dealer you get the tax credit. Either way they offered $14k on a 2015 Si with 36k miles(40% less the norm) with a $4.3k fender bender on the record. Only damage was to bumper, fender and hood. Everything was replaced with OEM parts ordered through a Honda dealership. Nothing structural at all. The car would've been worth $15.7k as a trade without that. Hope that helps you get an idea.

lol ppl see carmax and jump straight to conclusion without reading the whole post.
Mine doesn't have that high of a mileage and is modified so it probably wouldn't really be a good indication of a price :(

This is not how they calculate diminished value. Diminished value is the difference in FMV for a vehicle which has no accidents with same year, make, model, equipment and mileage compared to the same vehicle which has been repaired from an accident. It typically runs into a formula based on the age of the vehicle, extent of the damage, etc. You're trying to demonstrate a value based on the wholesale offer of purchase or trade. Good luck but you are going about this wrong.

Z3papa is right. The carmax appraisal might hurt you more than it helps. That was what happened in my DV claim.

If you are working on a diminished value claim I'd suggest just asking a dealer (or 2 or 3) give you a quote and note they are subtracting "X" due to accident history. Have them spell it out it writing and/or ask for a letter explaining the diminished value due to the accident.

CarMax. A company that offered me $700 for a car I sold a whole two years and 58,000 miles later for $4500.

I guess I do not understand how showing the difference in trade in value between a repaired car vs. an unrepaired car is going about it the "wrong" way. While I do understand the monetary value of what the car would actually "Sell" for and what I would get for a trade would be different, I do not see how showing that, for example, my repaired car received a whole sale offer of $23,000 vs. an unrepaired car with the same year, make, model, equipment and mileage received an offer of $25,000 would hurt my case. I also believe that the majority of the general population does not sell their cars private party, and will most likely look to a place like carmax or trade the car in at a dealership, so it is a comparison that makes sense.

The problem is that I have no way to make a true apples to apples comparison, because I am not actually selling my car. So any case I put together is entirely hypothetical.

I appreciate the response, and you seem to have some knowledge of DV claims, but saying I am doing it "wrong" without any suggestion about how to do it "right" is not really helpful.

Yeah I probably should have done this at carmax, because i do have in writing that my appraisal was lower because of the accident, but I did not ask them to show the value which was taken off because of that accident. That is where my request to have someone with a car that wasn't in an accident to get an appraisal is coming from. I might just call them or go back there and see if they can provide that information to me.
