Hi all, is anyone coming from an STI into a Type R? If so, can you please tell me your experience with the Type R and which car your happier with and the major differences in terms of driving experience and performance? Thanks!

i did, driving experience is way better in a type R (sitting position , steering .etc) everything feel better. i got a 16 sti suspension is rough. i feel like at high speed the type r is better.

Not a Type R, but I had 2 STIs before trading my 18 STI in for a new Civic Si. I've driven a Type R a couple times and here are my initial thoughts:
- Type R shifts much nicer than the STI
- Type R is quieter and more manageable on bumpy/crappy roads than the STI
- Seat holding and comfort were about equal in my opinion
- Both have really crappy audio systems.
- Type R engine felt smoother overall, especially at low RPMs or idle
- The Type R didn't feel quite as solid as my STI when I pushed it on some turns/freeway ramps
- Gas mileage is better in the Type R
- Only think I missed was the boxer rumble from the STI

I come from the STI world and still have several Subarus. I currently have a 07 STI, a 1999 GC8, Ascent Touring and I have owned a 2015 STI, 2013 Crosstrek, and a 2016 Subaru Forster.

My current Subaru build should put down close to 900whp once done and tuned. My old running setup that was tuned put down 680WHP.

I just don't drive a car to its max straight out of the box.... I do that and then push its modification limits.

Suspension:
A Subaru STI or even the WRX (2013 to newer) require a lot of suspension work to get them to handle the way they should. Straight out of the box my 15 suspension failed at 4,000 miles.... tires were also bald. The KW V3 setup is what is on my 07 ... I love it. With that when reviewing the Type R..... I haven't found the limits of its suspension yet (but I am barely breaking into the high 300s). Its floats a little at times but that could also be the electric steering. Once I am finished with a few more modifications I should break 470ish or push to 500. This will be the true test of the magnetic suspension on the R (I have no Is input as I don't own one.... yet). I rule stock out of the box, the Type R potentially is a better handling car in ideal weather and track conditions. The STI (not the Wrx) will own the type R all day long in none ideal weather.

Engine:
I popped my 07 STI stock engine with 540WHP but it took 7,000ish mile and super hard driving to do so. My 680whp setup on a built block didn't kill anything but my clutch.... the trans held up fine. I drove this setup for another 5,000 miles or so before deeming it too slow.

The type R to be honest... I am scared of breaking the rods. But I will let you know when and if I do. Same goes for the trans.

In stock form the Type R trans is better than all the STI trans except the 05 and 07 as these have better strength and gear ratios. (google it, I am not going into scientific detail).

Interior:
F** Subaru and every other company that cant afford to put real racing seats in a performance car. The Type R has one of the best stock racing seats ever ... hands down. Just for laughs the GTR has crappy seats but the JUKE.... the JUKE ....again I repeat the JUKE has the same seats as the Type R in the Nismo version.... why Nissan puts a better seat in less of a car.... I don't know (totally unrelated). The 05 to 07 had narrow racing seats but not as nice as the Type R seats. FYI, cover your RED type R seats... they will fade in the sun. Electronics in seats are over-rated for a drivers car.

Audio:
I don't turn mine on except for phone calls and directions.... couldn't tell you which is better. But I do think the speaker in my desk is blown from the GPS screaming when my windows are down. LOL

Steering:
The STI is better .... hands down. Its not electronic and reacts the way it should. All new Wrxs are electric and even more crap then the Type R. Give me a Manual none power steering any day..... and Id take it over electric.

Both cars are great cars.... both cars are two different driver experiences. Hands down I say right now I love them both equally for different reasons. This is why I own both.

Not to change the surest but the 911 turbo is by far one of my favorite stock for stock cars. But my favorite drivers car is the Alfa Romeo 4c. Owned a 4c and loved it.... but the TCM and ECM are poop.... they died several times on me and then I traded for the Type R.

MPH:
My STI stock felt terrible at anything over 120+ after suspension work... 154 is the fastest I ever had it. The Type R... I only have 6,000 miles or so on it... Just now with a tune and all the bolt ons do I feel like getting to 140+ doesn't take a hour. I am still pushing the cars newly tuned limits... more to come.

I had 18 STI which I traded in for my Type-R.
My STI was completely stock and my CTR is stock as well (except for wheels and tires)
Here's what I wrote a few months ago.

Do I miss the STI? Sometimes.
Do I regret trading it in? Not at all.

I traded in 18 STI for my 18 CTR.
Things I like about the Type-R
- Feels lighter and it's really easy to tell.
- Feels much more refined
- How it handles corners
- Acceleration is actually faster, but not from the full stop.
- Much better MPG. Much better
- No need to worry about the famous EJ issues
- Front seats feel better
- Short and precise feel of the shifter
- Clutch is really light and easy to live with, especially in the traffic
- Sound system is much better. Mainly because the base STI speakers are terrible. My STI didn't have optional HK system tho.
- Much better ride for daily driving
- Less road noise
- Interior features including huge storage spaces.
- Feels much more special
- HATCHBACK
- HATCHBACK
- HATCHBACK

Things that I miss
- The noise that boxer fossil makes. I know it all depends on personal preference, but no 4 cyl sounds better than EJ IMO
- Top info screen.
- How it handles corners. There's this feeling that you can only get in WRX/STI.
- Head Unit. Never thought I'd say this, especially for a Subaru, but the head unit in -18 civics are just Terrible.
- Seats. I do prefer the shape of my CTR but the recaro seats had much better seating surface and the back seats are just not comparable.
- Heated seats
- Rawness. It's probably one of the most 'raw' vehicles you can get right now. Hydraulic Steering, old engine, old AWD and the shifter mounted directly on the transmission.
- Shift knob, heavy, direct feel of the shifter.
- Gauge Cluster
- Steering wheel.
- Visibility. Not saying the civic has terrible visibility or anything, but the Subarus in general are basically glass boxes.
- Climate controls actually had some useful buttons.
- Tow hook license plate mount
- AWD sometimes....... not really tho
- Subie wave lol

I come from the STI world and still have several Subarus. I currently have a 07 STI, a 1999 GC8, Ascent Touring and I have owned a 2015 STI, 2013 Crosstrek, and a 2016 Subaru Forster.

My current Subaru build should put down close to 900whp once done and tuned. My old running setup that was tuned put down 680WHP.

I just don't drive a car to its max straight out of the box.... I do that and then push its modification limits.

Suspension:
A Subaru STI or even the WRX (2013 to newer) require a lot of suspension work to get them to handle the way they should. Straight out of the box my 15 suspension failed at 4,000 miles.... tires were also bald. The KW V3 setup is what is on my 07 ... I love it. With that when reviewing the Type R..... I haven't found the limits of its suspension yet (but I am barely breaking into the high 300s). Its floats a little at times but that could also be the electric steering. Once I am finished with a few more modifications I should break 470ish or push to 500. This will be the true test of the magnetic suspension on the R (I have no Is input as I don't own one.... yet). I rule stock out of the box, the Type R potentially is a better handling car in ideal weather and track conditions. The STI (not the Wrx) will own the type R all day long in none ideal weather.

I popped my 07 STI stock engine with 540WHP but it took 7,000ish mile and super hard driving to do so. My 680whp setup on a built block didn't kill anything but my clutch.... the trans held up fine. I drove this setup for another 5,000 miles or so before deeming it too slow.

I didn't come from an STi... But I heavily considered both and test drove both before settling on the CTR.

The reasons I didn't opt for the STi:
1. Subaru paint quality is brutal. Yes, the CTR paint sucks too, but given the option, I still think the Subaru paint is worse when comparing the two.

2. Fuel economy is horrendous. I have a few friends with STis and when they were telling me that they get 300km on 65L of premium fuel in the winter, I was a bit turned off. The CTR is way ahead, but granted, it only drives the front wheels vs all four. It doesn't help the STi engine hasn't changed all that much since it's its first inception.

3. I prefer a hatchback over a sedan. Just personal preference. You can cram way bigger stuff into a hatchback as opposed to a sedan.

4. I see STis on a daily basis. CTRs? Maybe once every 2-3 weeks. I like having a car that isn't very common.

5. I was turned off by STi engines destroying themselves. Thus far, the CTR engine has proven to be pretty bullet proof. Granted, the failure rate of STi engines is pretty small. But why risk it if I don't have to?

6. Driving dynamics- personally, I just thoroughly enjoyed my time behind the wheel of the CTR way more. Yes, both are very sporty, but it felt like the CTR was better in every way possible. Even if it was a lie, it just felt better. The CTR, when driven, felt much lighter on its feet. It also felt like the STi would understeer sooner than the CTR. Which seems crazy.

7. Living in Canada and after growing up driving FWD, I wanted a switch to AWD (I've had a couple RWD cars in that time, but never AWD). But besides starting off the line faster, there seemed little.. no wait.. no advantage to having the STi system over the CTR. The one place where the STi really shines is when hooning in the winter.... But it's a double edged sword. Why? Because although hooning in the winter is way more fun, the odds of losing control and crashing also go up way higher also.

8. I also preferred the seating position in the CTR more also. I love the CTR seats. They're super comfy for me and the seating position feels lower also. I hate feeling like I'm sitting up high.

9. While the CTR looks a bit childish on the outside, you rarely see it. You spend your time inside the car the most and I prefer the CTR interior over the STi. And plus... Dat Honda 6MT... It's fantastic.

Just my anecdotal experience and 2 cents. Take it for what you think it's worth :)

Friend, with respect, I come from a long line of cars both RWD and AWD - the STi platform even with serious modifications is a stretch to say you had 700+ streetable and now are shooting for 900 streetable. It's just not feasible, and sounds a bit silly.

I mean come on friend, you're going to / and have been - driving more power on the daily - reliably - than Ken Block?

The car that Ken Block used in his first Gymkhana video was this Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Built by Vermont SportsCar and powered by a flat-four engine, this STI produces 565 horsepower

You may have a very generous dyno in your area, but I don't believe that you are rolling that then, or now, with respect.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Note sure why folks wouldn't believe this.

I came from 2010 STI to a 2018 Si. As for a daily driver, I don't miss it whatsoever. The STI was popular with my friends and what not but the Si was is so much more livable. $ for $ the Si is incredible. My Si has an intake and tune and is faster than what my STI was when it was Cobb stage 1.

In saying all this, I'm sure you'd be more than happy with a type r. It is a monster. Sometimes I regret not going with the type r myself. If you're going all out racecar and have deep pockets then the Subaru is probably still the way to go.

I came from a 2015 wrx to a 2016 wrx sti to the 2018 type r.

wrx was a 3 month mistake. Should have just gotten the sti from the start. Sti, liked the sunroof, blind spot and rear cross traffic alerts, real hand brake, handling feel, all wheel drive as well as the rumble. Ride was rough and fuel mileage sucked.

Type r, love the hatch practicality, shifter, power down low in the rev range, seats, adjustable suspension, and the look of the damn thing.

I miss the awd when the roads are snowy and generally crappy, the sunroof and the sounds from the sti. Otherwise I feel like the type r is superior and I feel like it’s a better car, but that’s pretty expected given how long that ej 25 has been around. Knowing what I know now I would still pick the type r especially with the crazy resale prices going on.
