Civic Si Summer Tire Ordeal (rant)

So since I live in California I opted to keep the Eagle F1s on the car since we hardly see any other season than sun. Driving on the hwy today with only 15k on them rear right pops completely. Was able to limp to a tire shop literally off the exit where it popped so that was lucky. Not so luckily they did not have the tire so, only having Honda roadside assistance my only option was to get towed to a Honda dealer and I was sure they would have the tire. Lucky me I called and they had the tire! Called Honda roadside and got towed to the dealer. I arrived and turns out they were wrong and did not have the tire and no dealers around have the tire either. YAY! Called most of the tire shops I could find on google to deliver me a tire and no luck. The dealer I got towed ended up being able to find a tire but not until tomorrow. They had 0 loaners to offer me now I'm stuck in a Jetta from hertz till tomorrow. I also learned that Honda roadside is for the most part useless and I will need to be singing up for AAA this evening. They are only able to take you to Honda dealers (fair enough) but they are not allowed to pick up your car from one Honda dealer and take to another if that dealer cannot accommodate.

TL;DR - Eagle F1 is apparently an elusive tire and not having a spare or AAA sucks

A 235/40 r18 is probably not a size that most tire places (or dealers) would tend to keep in stock. It’s all 225/65s for CRVs and RAV4s.

Bummer. I had two tire punctures on my Si in 18 months. I did NOT like not having a spare.. and did NOT like having to wait around for Honda Roadside assistance. Get in line and put an order in for the "spare tire kit". AAA may or may not be better than the Honda program afterall. I was fortunate as my car had the All seasons and my dealer had them in stock .

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. I’m in the same boat. At least you didnt damage anything else. I was merging onto the hwy today with a line of other vehicles in front of me. Ended up running over a pretty good sized object as did several other cars ahead and behind me as I saw them pulling over to the shoulder. My tire didnt blow but my new wheel got bent and the tire got gouged pretty good. Only like 10 days old from Tirerack. And the underside of front my bumper just ahead of the wheel got gouged as well. Just put in an order for a new wheel and tire. Should be able to get fully reimbursed for the tire though through Tirerack.

Another example of how Honda Roadside Assistance and Honda Dealerships are totally worthless. Just get decent insurance that has tow and rental car and you're happiness level will go up 1,000%.
Repeat your new mantra: "Don't take the car to the dealer..Don't take the car to the dealer..Don't take the car to the dealer"

Most all the manufacturers use AAA for their roadside assistance in the States due to their network. I actually work for AAA so I get free membership. I had they same problem but I was 20 miles outside Charlotte in the country. Got the car towed to the dealer and then waited 2 days as I also bent the rim. No one had a matching tire or even the same size in stock. That’s one of the problems with these low profile large tires. I learned something from that experience, this is the first and last car I’ll buy that doesn’t have a spare.

Did you get a chance to inspect the tire to see the reason of the failure? If it was me, I would want to know.. was it unusual wear in one spot indicating an alignment issue? If so your new tire will do the same eventually. Or was it a sidewall bubble or something similar? If so there might be a warranty on the tire that you can pursue.

Didn't inspect too much only noticed that the inside side wall had completely tore and it didn't feel like I hit anything major when it popped so kinda odd. Tire wear seemed pretty even on all corners so I don't think it will continue to happen. Cars at the dealer now and getting a new tire so not much I could do to see if tire itself potentially malfunctioned. Will have to ask if they noticed anything strange. I've seen threads here about getting a spare for our SIs so I should start looking into that.

Absolutely!! Advise to people who think Honda's roadside will suffice, IT WILL NOT!! Just get AAA, the tow company Honda used was AAA and that driver was the most helpful person in the entire situation lol

I bought a spare from a recycler. My Honda dealership referred me there. $100. Taller than the F1’s, but it fits in the wells, and would get me off the desert to civilization. Fits in the trunk well, and only takes up a little luggage space. Never on the ground, so $100 for wheel and tire was ok by me.

These low profile tires are great for handling but it really doesn’t take much to pop one. When you feel a harsh bump, that’s the rim hitting the road as the tire is all the way compressed. A little too much and or on something a little jagged, game over. And yes, AAA strives for great service. My daughter has a year old Hyundai and locked her keys in the car the other day. Told her to call Hyundai roadside. Guess who showed up 30 mins later? Yep, AAA and popped it open.

Oh, the humiliation!

Also, the summer tires suck, especially in the rain, they will slip-slide through every puddle on the freeway. At like 70mph I mean, if you slow down it's not so bad, but still.

Get better tires. I can't say which ones, I am still stuck in the fitment thread looking at bling.

The car should come with a lucky rabbit's foot, given what is provided by default.
