The moment is finally here! After a shot of nitrous, lots of race fuel, and 100s of passes, our 1.5T Civic Si went boom! We begin to tear down and diagnose what happened and how we can improve with our Civic X build going forward. Moving forward we are finally dropping in our built engine and continuing to make more power and go faster!

See the dyno pull that killed the engine at 3:15
See the engine carnage at 3:40
See us cut the engine in half at 7:31
See the built motor at 7:43

Keep your Civic X build going here: https://www.maperformance.com/pages/honda-civic-x-si-performance-parts

My guess is the Cracked sleeve is what killed it.

Or the extra stress from the bent rod caused the sleeve to fail.

With mine there's still a piston left it's just lodged upside down in my cylinder wall haha.

@MAPerformance I have a similar built motor to the one you've now dropped in. How much abuse do you expect this one to handle safely? And on a unrelated note, did your turbo survive this incident?

Could also be it, but the highest load ( with a bend rod) would accure somewhere above BDC.So i guess the sleeve would crack halfway then.
If the sleeve cracked from the pressure ,coolant would enter the combustion chamber and water can't be compressed which would bend the rod .
I'm sure MAP will figure it out ,curious to see what actually is the weakest link.

Good stuff.

Yet people are somehow blowing their motors with bolt-ons and blaming bad tunes

It's a combo... Bolt-on's/bad tune/driver taking car to it's limits. Sometimes it's a good tune pushing an engine further than it's design allows

No doubt. They'll give out eventually. Surprised these cars actually output a good amount of torque, which is the killer. My old D17 at 250whp(stock 115), lasted roughly almost 2 years before it started to develop a knock. But even with the 10th gens, a intake and a tune will put you right around that mark to begin with.
