A1 vs B1 Maintenance - Type R

Hey guys,

I have almost 5500 miles and my '19 Type R and its time for an oil change.
I am going to the dealer ship to have it done, i'm too lazy to change it my self.

Have you guys noticed the difference between an A1 and B1 service.
According to Honda, A1 is only supposed to "Replace engine oil."
For B1 (or all B maintenance minders) it say "Replace engine oil and oil filter."

Why would they only replace engine oil in some circumstances and not the filter as well.

What has been your guy's experience? IF you had your oil changed at a dealership, what was the result? Did they try to only replace the oil and not the filter?

And maybe someone can explain why they would recommend the oil only without the filter.

The oil filter is rated for 15k miles. The oil itself is rated variably depending on how you drive the vehicle. So if you need at oil change < 6500 miles, the minder will tell you not to change the filter since you can do that next time and stay within spec (6500 * 2 = 13k miles -> 2k miles to spare). If you're closer to 7k or past 7.5k it may tell you to change the filter since if you do that again, you'll overdo what your filter is quoted for. Note that both Minder A and Minder B can include filter changes.

I took mine to the dealer for the first change and used an oil/filter change coupon. They didnt mention anything about how A1 was "only oil".

Strange. I remember a B1 (there is a 7 after the 1 for mine) popped up for mine at around 5850 several months ago.

My first maintenance was a B maintenance at a around 6700 miles. It included an oil filter. I don't know what the actual threshold is, I do know there is one since the filter is rated for 15k miles.

Gotcha. Thanks for the response. It's always good to know these things as the manual can be very vague and even if one changes his/her oil often.

This is just my opinion...to change the oil and leave an oil filter in the system that is full of dirty/contaminated oil is insanity! Especially first change on a new engine. Porsche tried crap like this back in the early 2000's. In fact they said since the engine has synthetic oil it is good for 15,000 miles. That is B.S. brought to you by marketing types. I believe my Porsche owners manual has these instructions and some people who bought those cars didn't know the difference and actually followed those instructions!! I haven't decided how to handle the oil changes on the Type R as I just flipped past 1,000 miles, but any change will definitely include a filter change too. My changes will probably be based on time more than miles regardless of what the oil minder thinks!

My dealer actually charges less for filter then you can get them on line. For 7 bucks i would just tell them each time to change the filter too. Ive had 3 oil changes and everytime they change the filter i haven't had to say anything. I dont think you will find many that wont do that.

This reminds me of a friend who bought the first generation Cayman when it was a new model. He told me the oil change interval in the manual was 20,000 miles. He and I went to multiple track events, and he drove it daily, and after a few years, he sold it, without ever having given it an oil change! I was always kinda horrified by the thought.

Track days will absolutely KILL the oil. Just the additional heat breaks oil down badly. Horrifying is right! My guess is that engine has probably been rebuilt or has broken badly.

Doesn't include cost of oil.

It was also a state inspection. Total for all was 68. The oil change was 29 plus tax and disposal. For a full synthetic change and filter still way cheap. Only thing my dealee doesn't rip you off on. Oh and they patched a wheel in that price.

$29? Holy crap thats cheaper than I can do it myself for. What dealer? I am in Greensboro, but for that price I can always make a day or weekend trip and get it done and spend some time in Asheville with my Wife. haha
