I like where I live but there aren't many IT jobs around this area. I have been doing IT work since 2002 and enjoy my commute in some ways. It lets me cover tons of audiobooks. Dealing with traffic sucks less with a suitable distraction.

I have not worried about the price of gas. I like knowing how efficient I can be with a car. Even when I was young and driving 300-500whp cars, I still liked knowing how many miles I could squeeze out of a full tank. Hell it is why I drove a 350Z and Z06 from NJ to Disney. Many of my cars were decatted or catless, I don't care about the effects of a single cars pollution.

@Gruber Who is panicking about gas prices on the forum? People in California maybe?
I also like to see how low can I go. I sort of enjoyed driving a rental Prius, watching all the displays and trying to drive for free. I also like saving anything even if it costs nothing, because that's the way I am.

As for panicking about gas prices, just look into those threads about classic car shapes such as sedans or coupes going extinct. You will read there that gas prices are dirt cheap now and they are bound to go sharply up (in the undefined "future", but always just around the corner, like the Apocalypse/Armageddon  ). And then the suckers who bought SUVs will be sorry, throwing their worthless gas guzzlers over a cliff, and looking for smaller cars in a hurry. This is fantasy, because, first those SUVs are also getting much better gas mileage than the famous Hummers, and second, because gas prices are not going anywhere in the foreseeable future. Of course, unless some needy-greedy and wasteful government doubles the taxes on fuel.

I love my Si for the fact that it can be efficient, or it can be driven spiritedly for fun. I cannot begin to count how many times I have seen a Prius go screaming by me at 85+ mph on the NJ parkway. I wonder how efficient they are when driven that way. With the low rolling resistance tires, I'd hate to see them in an emergency braking or handling situation.

Not going to lie, I'd like to drive a prius or other hybrid for a week to see what it is like. Hell, I initially was looking at the CRZ since it was available with a manual transmission... but then saw it was only a 2 seater so that killed it. So far as SUV's.... I'm ambivalent about them. My wife loves hers, I like it too. But I would honestly prefer a minivan over it, unfortunately the wife hates minivans. We have a Traverse, and my wifes job, kids school, daycare, both of our parents, two of my brothers, one of her sisters are all in about a 5 mile or less distance. As a result, she gets like 14mpg. When we take long drives it gets about 21 mpg. Of course that is with the car packed with family, diaper bags, doublestroller, etc.

But I have to admit, I don't see many Hummers driving around, occasionally an H3, but they are rare. I do see plenty of old and modern Suburban, Escalade, Tahoe, and Tahoe XL driving around, so I think the fear that fuel prices will kill them is a bit sensationalist.

these computers are programmed to show a higher MPG then you are actually getting,

personally, i don't believe them one bit,

when i fill up my tank and calculate it out myself, its no where near what my cars MPG is telling me
Exactly, I do the same thing. I always get around 30-32 average

You can’t go by what the screen says. The true way to check your mileage is real easy with basic math. First you go to the gas station and fill it up, let the pump shut off by itself once full. Then crank it up and write down your odometer reading. Then drive it normally without trying to baby the hell out of it. Then once the low fuel light comes on you go to the same gas pump and fill it back up allowing the pump to shut off by itself once it’s full. Then you write down the gallons you had to put in to fill it up. Now you take your current odometer reading and subtract it from your previous odometer reading, and then take that number and divide it by the gallons you used to fill it up. This will give you a accurate mpg average. Like I said, my LX 2.0 MT gets 30-32 average
One miner comment, you can use the Trip B Odometer and just reset it each time you fill up instead of having to "do the math" on starting mileage vs ending mileage. Aside from that this is the method I have used for 10+ YEARS and it's accurate enough I can tell down to the week when they switch between winter and summer mix fuels because my Trailblazer suddenly loses or gains half an MPG.

the bonus to using the trip B is you can see the computers idea of what your MPG supposedly is for the tank so you can really see just how WRONG the computer numbers are, twice now out of 3 fill ups i've seen it be off by 2 MPG which is around about a 5% overage.

This is why a plug-in hybrid Civic (Clarity is what Honda is calling it but it is just a Civic) would be an absolute delight for people like you (And even me if I am honest with myself).. You plug in overnight and get enough range to cover all your daily commute at city speeds. Just skip using gas at all for the daily. The Clarity has 46 miles (76 KM) of range on the battery. I can go to work and back twice on that. Too bad the car would cost me almost twice what it costs to buy and finance

[/QUOTE]

Yes that would be great, only problems are 1. I live in an apt building, and park in the streets, so charging would be challenging, 2 like you said, the are more expensive.

Illinois doubled the gas tax this past July.
