I am trying to make a separate switch for the foglight since it doesnt turn on with just the drl. will leaving the connector to the foglight unplug give me error codes on the dash?

Not 100% sure, but I have never heard of error codes due to any lights not working.

you want the foglights on with drl's?
a relay (N.C. contact) in reverse tapped into the positive on each of the fog light harnesses and energized by the drl cct positive through a SPST switch would do it.
connect the N.O. contact to a fused 12v positive and if the switch on, the drl cct will pick up the relays and light the fog lights - if the switch is off, all lighting operations are normal
