Are you sure they aren't taking you for a ride on the tranny?

Lots of people here report 2nd gear being difficult/clunky to engage and making noises. My experience hasn't been different and I have a '17 sedan with 25k on it.

My personal experience is that 1-2 shift has always been rough (and at times difficult to even engage). Solution is to wait a half second after letting off and and clutching in before engaging 2nd. That method produces smooth quiet shift.

Discussion on that issue:

I hear a whistle type noise from the turbo. A “whine” type noise I more associate with an alternator or power steering. Of course, one can describe the same noise differently than another. Oh, do you have ac on when you hear it?
Mine makes a whistle under heavy acceleration, but I've got a Injen short ram so I figured that's why I hear it?

Somewhat off-topic, but the title reminded me of this. Is it normal to hear a faint engine clicking at crawling speeds? My last engine was a '99 NA V6, so I'm not all that up-to-date on typical modern (& new) engine sounds :p
If you open the hood and hear the same ticking its likey the direct injection its loud.

It has something to do with your ac. Mine makes that whistling noise between 2-3k rpm. It goes away when I turn off the ac. You should've received a letter from honda about this.

Well at this point it's not really a problem, they will take out the tranny and see if something is broken. The technician told me there really was something wrong so I won't argue with him since it's going to be free of charge anyway. I'm suspecting the clutch is going out and yes I've heard about the problem with 1st to 2nd, but maybe they'll find something new?

Not the AC. I've owned the car since June and I never used the AC. I hate AC's it gives me headaches.

Well apparently the turbo is fine, no boost leak or whatnot. Buuuuut, I also told them about having a problem shifting to 2nd gear sometimes and that I could hear a clunk when 2nd was engaging. Turns out the gear is going out and they need to change it. 2000$ in repair since they need to take out the transmission etc. Told me if there were signs of abuse it would not be under the warranty, but the dealership were I bought it from will pay it for me if it is not covered by the warranty. So to everyone having problem shifting into 2nd gear, I suggest you take the car to the dealer.
could you give me an estimate mileage at the time this took place. I am facing a similar problem and was wondering if the dealership would be able to cover the fix as well.

I'm at 18k miles, they would only be able able to cover the fix with the warranty if there is no sign of abuse when they take it out, for me, there was no sign of abuse, just a bad clutch I guess, they replaced the whole thing and now it's going way better

Sorry I got a couple more questions if you don't mind answering them.
1. how is the car running now?
2. you said they will cover the fix with warranty if there is no sign of abuse when they take it out. what exactly do you mean when you say "take it out"? take it out for a drive? if so, is it with you or the one of the dealers people drive it.
Thanks in advance.

Hey!

1- Car is running great, no more crutching of the clutch in 2nd and the clutch just feels so much better. Its a night and day difference.
2- I meant when they dismantle the transmission of the car and take out the clutch to look at it and the flywheel to see if there is any signs of abuse. They do not make the decision, they take pictures of everything and send them to Honda directly, for me it was Honda Canada that reviewed the pictures and decided there was no sign of abuse so they approved the repairs and the warranty.

Thanks!

Well I'm surprised. I took the lid off the air filter box, removed the filter and left the lid "askew". I wanted to see how my engine would respond without any restriction in the air path to the turbo. I had expected to hear the same turbo whine/whistle that I hear on most turbo diesel trucks, and that I had heard on my first turbo car, a Dodge Daytona. Instead all I heard was a whoosh of air being pulled in by the turbo, and then the release "pop" when I let off the gas. I'm disappointed. If the total of the intake sound our cars make is a "white noise" whoosh, then no wonder our cars sound so gutless. I don't associate the sound of blowing dust around with an air hose as being horsepower. Thankfully I got a nice bump up in cabin "engine" noise when I installed a stiffer Rear Motor Mount.

As far as the engine response. It felt to me like the engine was more "relaxed" and was "breathing" easier. I suspect that it would be a measurable increase in performance. My experiment confirmed to me that the restriction in the tenth gen intake system is the air box configuration.

Hi @Masked !

What happened to your whine sound? Did anything come of it?

Hey Tomy,

I still hear a whining sound right now, to be fair I'll wait and see, and think the turbo might be doing it and a whining turbo is never a good thing. I'm still on warranty though so if he goes out I'll get myself a brand new one at the dealer!
