I've managed to get Android Auto operational with my S10 and 2018 Civic. Initially I had trouble with it but some info on Google that suggested it was related to the USB connection mode and it was suggested to switch to developer mode, enable USB Debugging, and then USB Tethering as the default connection style. This worked initially but for whatever reason is does not remember the setting. Even if I select it as default. Every time I remove the phone from the USB or turn the car off and reconnect I am required to pull down the notification screen, select, USB options, and reselect USB tethering.

For whatever reason my selection of making the USB tethering the default connection type is not sticking. It's a pain in the butt to have to reset it every time I hook the phone up in my car.

Any ideas how to fix this?

My first thought was to use Tasker, but a google search led me to this:

So it seems your issue is a security "feature", not a bug. In any case, it seems it won't be possible to automate it through Tasker unless you root your phone or buy AutoInput.

Well that royally sucks. Just another example of a company going too far thinking they are doing you a favor but ultimately screwing you over.

My question is why even give you the option to select a default connection type of they are only going to change it.

The s10 is an extremely common phone and the civic is an extremely common car. There must be hundreds of people in my exact situation.

I wanted to give an update on this problem. The issue is now fixed and I must admit I'm even embarrassed to mention it here. But for the sake of anyone else that runs into this problem I don't want them to struggle with the solution like I did.

The solution is simply to use the OEM charge cable that came with the phone. Despite reading in the instructions to use the OEM factory cable, I blew it off thinking that the Anker cable I had in my truck was perfectly fine. It's been excellent in all other aspects of usage up to this point.
I've really wracked my brain to determine the cause and after realizing the only part of the instructions I didn't follow was the use of the OEM cable I gave it a shot. Bottom line is that using the OEM cable fixed the problem perfectly.

Lesson learned. I still don't understand how it can make a difference but obviously there is something identifiable about that cable that the phone sees.

SMH.......

Don't be ashamed. I insisted on using an otherwise very good cable that wasn't the OEM one with my S9. It worked but no where near as reliably as with the factory cable.

I just wish that Honda would update our headunit software to allow for wireless android auto.

I agree. I suppose they could do it with a standard firmware update to the head unit. I know a lot of aftermarket units from Pioneer and Kenwood have been releasing wireless units.

Has there been any auto.akers that have release wireless units? Nissan? Toyora?

Xda Developer forum. Search for Head Unit Reloaded. Costs $5 and you want the latest beta. It is a work in progress but shows promise
Occasionally crashes out but I have been emailing back and forth with the developer. He is a same day email reply mostly.

They really could. Wireless CP/AA needs wifi and bluetooth and the Honda headunits do have both. It would be a purely software based feature add. It could necessitate a newer version of Android OS as well, but just the same, software.

Indeed they are. Looking to add one to my wife's CRV quite soon.

None at all but the word from Google is that it is supposed to start showing up in MY 2020 vehicles.

I should elaborate that unless there is something limiting regarding the wifi that is in the Civics, this should be quite doable.

But even if that was an issue, frankly, Honda should make a replacement HU that could be offered to existing owners. They sell us accessories for everything else under the sun so why the hell not this?

That wouldn't be though a 2017 onwards model, would it? Cause I have been searching for a headunit for the CR-V 1.5T and found nothing...

No it is a Gen3 2010 model. Sorry for possibly getting your hopes up with that.

All of this heavily integrated stuff is making it harder and harder to go aftermarket and maintain all the cameras and functions that we do get if we stay stock. There are a few interesting options out there but they are all cheap Chinese things and nothing from the likes of Kenwood or Pioneer or Sony, etc...

I've been experience the same issues. My galaxy s10 has never worked with my 18 civic si. i've tried many USB cables, but nothing works. My problem is the music not playing. it freezes for a couple seconds and not sound comes out. I've been trying to use since day 1 but it's impossible. The work around would be to honda hack to install a file manager to play music from a USB stick and use AA for the GPS only.

As infernal as it might seem, did you try uninstalling the AA app from your phone and reinstalling? As well as deleting all bluetooth pairings from the car and your phone?

I've tried everything. Uninstalling and installing, clear cache and data, installing previous versions of AA, trying my old galaxy s8 and s9. Using a different music streaming app other than spotify. But nothing.
I was hoping that the new version that came out with the new layout would fix everything but it's the same problems.
Tried contacting AA from Google and they only suggestion is to use different USB cables, uninstalling, clear data, bla bla bla.
It seems like it worked for some people but not for my car.

Is your audio broken just through usb/AA or is it also broken via bluetooth over the standard Honda Audio streaming?
