Well... The car is only 3 weeks old and my wife hit a deer. There's not a lot of damage but when I start the car It displays a list of errors on the dash. I assume it damaged something in the electronics? The air bags did not deploy. I'll be calling insurance shortly. It doesn't look like the intercooler or piping is damaged.

Any idea what would be causing the errors?

a) I hope your wife is ok
b) the damage doesn't look too bad

But, to answer your question, I would include a picture of what are the list of errors displayed?

Wife is fine. She'll live to to shop another day :)

Here are some of the errors.

There's more damage under the hood. I guess I'll just get the estimate and see where this goes.

That last picture. If that sensor connector is broken that may be it. I'd try reconnecting that's if it will even go back in. Some the pins look bent. Good luck.

Honestly? I'd consider leaving it alone. While the impact "looks small".. it could be a larger issue. If you start "fixing" things, then if you go to insurance to have it fixed, they will not know about the other issues you've had and will deny coverage (thats what they do ;) ) if what you "fixed" is not done correctly.

Clearly there are some sensors damaged. Park assist/lane control sensors? Power steering is electric, brakes/stability control etc.

Yeah. I'm leaving it as it is and have it towed to the repair shop. Thanks!

Do you think that the 2020 feature of break assist would have stopped the collision? I don't see well at night so a break nanny is not necessarily a bad idea for me as I get older!

I would bet it will be easily $3000. The whole bumper cover and subcomponents costs quite a lot on its own. The fender is damaged and I would bet that not only is the hood a loss, but the mounting struts for it likely have to be replaced. And then all the under the hood things...

I t-boned a deer in our 2010 CRV a number of years ago but managed to get on the brakes quite firmly before hitting. Broke two of the three mount points on the passenger side headlight and hairline cracked the bumper. It also accellerated the failure of some of the clips for the washer filler neck too. However, from what I have seen of these Civics in accidents, they like to crumple fast.

I am satisfied with the performance of the sensing in my Civic and it has saved me a couple times so far. Note that at city speeds, the Honda sensing can typically stop fast enough to not hit a small child so a deer should trigger the hell out of it.

Dude, take it from people who have hit deer, that shit happens so fast you almost always have 0 time to react. Even if you drive cautious and with your high beams on you will only ever see the ones you wont hit. Here when they get spooked they are on you in a blink of an eye.

OP, did you call the insurance and ask if that is covered under comp? if you have comp in your area. If you do your rates wont go up.

^This. I had a small animal run out in from of me while I was going about 75 on the highway the other day and a few near misses from deer when on back roads. Happened so quick I had no reaction at all until after I realized what I did to the poor thing.

I thought my question was clear but perhaps not. Would the 2020 crash avoidance system now available on the 2020 made for a different outcome? The car that hit the deer was a 2019. I wonder if the electronic nanny would have made a difference???

We may never know. Driving down an open road and having a visual on a non-moving deer is one thing. A deer popping through a treeline 6 feet from the edge of a country road that jumps directly into your path? Not so sure. Avoidance systems cant change the law of physics. A car still needs a certain amount of space to stop. Its certainly possible that the systems reactions could be quicker than a human and therefore beneficial. I don't know if you could find any test scenarios played out on youtube to support a benefit or not in this particular scenario.

Yes, the system would have helped. Racer is right in that it is all relative to how much time even the computer has to react. However, the computer WILL react. Human reaction times are massive compared to computers even with slow software.

I can tell you that from 50kph, when the system decides to stop you, you STOP and in a way and speed that will surprise the hell out of you. Yes, traction between the tires and the driven surface and the speed from which you are slowing will all affect the absolute outcome but if you take half a second or longer to react, the difference between that and the computer will result in either a full save or very greatly reduce the scale of damage and injury.

Enjoy all the watching... https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=iihs+collision+avoidance

Thanks for all the feedback folks! My wife did say that she slammed on the brakes and actually slid a bit, so she managed to slow down some before making contact. The deer slid down the road in front of her and then got up and ran away. I would hate to see what the damage would be in a serious accident! Yikes

The problem with the computer avoiding this is the that vehicles behind you would also have to react quickly. A human may decide to forgo slamming on the brakes to avoid a rear end collision. Each case is different I guess. :)
