Which he also said is all a guess and they won't know until people have them in their cars. For a product that took so much time to get to market, you'd think they would have the R&D and testing done already. Considering the numbers he gave you and the numbers he gave me were different, it just seems like he's tossing numbers in the wind. I'll probably still end up getting the stage 2, but I've not been real impressed with the info coming out.
They are building massive overhead into the wheel torque numbers. There was another exchange with @LilToTo17 that he shared on FB where Bill said they were assuming something like 25% drivetrain loss and then another 20-30% in safety overhead (on top of drivetrain loss). Anyway, I'm hoping for good things still, but won't be the first person putting one on my car. Ideal would be the ability to do a full-faced organic disk (for daily driveability) and have that hold a stage 1 tune. But even 325 clutch torque would be something pretty close to 280 wheel torque.

Some more information, such as it is, on the Exedy kits. I'd say the answers are disappointing. This is per an email exchange with Bill Garrett. The fact that all of the disks are unsprung, whether or not they are paired with a SMF or not, seems problematic to me. It looks like we're still without an acceptable option in the aftermarket aside from the Type R retro kits, which have their own set of problems, mainly owing to limited availability.

Begin reply:

The Stage 1 is rated for 235ft/lbs. at the wheels. These all still include a 25% safety factor.

I’ll run through your questions in order:

1. I have seen kits for sale a few places, but are they actually shipping yet?

Good in stock and can be shipped at any time (our website will always take longer to update)

2. Will the clutch kit have any greater holding capacity if paired with the single-mass flywheel? My assumption is that it would not be advisable to reuse the dual-mass flywheel at this point (I have 28k on the car). Is that correct? I'm better off going to the single-mass rather than trying to reuse the dual-mass?

The flywheel will not make a difference in holding capacity but no flywheel should be used without resurfacing.

a. Dual-mass fw’s cannot be resurfaced due to their design

b. The disc is undampened and will have more NVH with a solid FW vs. DMF (this is performance over comfort scenario)

3. I daily my car and am regularly in traffic, stop and go type stuff. My assumption is that the full-faced organic (Stage 1) will be much more driveable than the Stage 2 product that you are releasing. Would this be a fair assumption? That the Stage 2 puck-style will have a much more aggressive engagement?

The full-faced disc will always be more streetable than a cera-metallic disc. They can be slipped where any metallic disc cannot.

4. Understanding the many variables that go into clutch life, would the Stage 1 have a similar expected life to the OEM clutch? (assuming you aren't exceeding its capacity, abusing it, etc.)

We never make any claims for life of a clutch, especially in performance applications due to the usage of the products.

a. When used in the same circumstances, there is no reason for the to wear any quicker

b. The friction material is both stronger and able to withstand more heat.

c. The metal in the cover is strong and the clamp load is increased over stock.

5. Other aftermarket clutches that have released so far (ClutchMasters and Spec specifically) have experienced issues with high RPM lockout. This seems to be because the clutch master cylinder that came with the car lacks the capacity to deal with the increased force of the pressure plate. Will that be the case with your clutch as well, or will the stock CMC work with the Stage 1 clutch kit?

We have not seen any lockout in testing, but admittedly do not have much street testing done yet. However, those companies are either modifying a stock unit or using a unit designed for another vehicle and adapting it. We try to always design a new product when possible. There are only a small number of examples where we adapt using a different product.

Thanks for the update. Exedy really missed the mark with this. Literally EVERYONE was waiting on them to send us what we all need. A clutch with their quality that handles 300 ft-lb plus without issue. You'd think that they understood the market of aftermarket clutches for turbo applications. Without verification that they can actually handle more power than they're saying (and do so for the long run), it's just not worth a thousand plus bucks to buy their clutch and flywheel. You would think that their R&D team would have checked into what the market needs and brought that out instead of these ones. I'd rather spend the money on a 3 plus clutch, plus flywheel and CMC and know for certain it has the balls to hold the power. Stock lasted me 6 months tuned. I never drag from a dig, I don't do overdrive WOT and am only running TSP stage 1...nothing else. But am adding PRL Cobra Race Maf CAI and invidia r400 with custom dyno tune. I'll be going for something other than Exedy for now. I would do the R retro fit...but Eman has never answered any messages, on any platform I have found him on...so that's out too.

What are you talking about lol. FB he replied to a lot of people yesterday. If he doesn't reply the first time then don't wait and keep messaging as he gets hundreds of messages a day.

Shit, I never thought I would see the day when exedy disappoints me. This is just sad.
It truly shows they don't understand or care about this particular market segment...which is crazy. With all the "hot hatches" and small four banger turbo cars now, performance clutches are more and more sought after...it's a growing market segment which a good deal of money is out there to be made on expensive clutches. It's just unfortunate they're rated at such low torque numbers. Until they're willing to up their figures, their sales will be poor on the gen 10 boosted segment.

Until then, I keep on sending Eman messages with no response...stared messaging in July for eff's sake.
