Why does my neighbor backup their car like this?

My neighbor does not follow common sense or intuition and always backs their car out of their driveway like in the picture I am attaching. Does anyone else actually do this? Is there any sensible reason that justifies this? It's pretty annoying everytime I see him centimeters from kissing my driveway and mailbox, and he blocks the road for at least twice as long than if he did it the normal way

There are a lot of people that just should not be allowed to operate a motorized vehicle of any kind. IF they aren't from the UK or Oz and are still getting used to the rest of the world, then I would just give them as wide a birth as possible and don't be near them on the road either.

I can actually see some logic in how your neighbor parks, especially if they are not competent to reverse accurately.

Reversing INTO his driveway requires significantly more skill, than Reversing OUT into the much wider road.

That being said, if you feel that he endangers you or your property, invite him over for a few beers, and when he is mellowed, tell him about your concerns.
Hopefully you will get a more satisfactory result, telling him, than telling us in the forum.

But yes, it sucks having STUPID neighbors !!

I'm not saying he should reverse into his driveway so he can just drive out of it. I figure even most people who reversepark in public parking lots don't reversepark into their homes. But what he is doing is reversing a different direction than what most people would do (and it endangers my property even more if he's not competent at reversing)

Also I'm just a guy in his 20s living in his parents house (my parents are also concerned about this) and he is a middle aged father. I am open to that kind of problem solving but its def a hard pill to swallow for my parents

I reverse park at home too.
My reasoning is, with a coupe (no rear wiper), I can't see well enough, to back out safely, when the rear glass is covered with dew and condensation.
Plus, I just love the precision of backing up, using mirrors (and now a camera). Silly, i know ... but it's the simple things in life that make me smile (and keep me sane)!

I pull in and back out but I use a squeegee to clean off the morning dew off the rear window I hear you on the mirrors I don’t use the back up camera much I use the mirrors I guess I’m used to backing up the trucks to the loading dock at work but I do like the lane watch

Ya, if people haven't realized, the person that the OP is talking about is driving in forward and parking (Fine, most do this). when they leave to go west according to the drawing, rather than backing out so that they are in the far lane from their side of the road, they are backing out backwards wise by departing in a way as to make it look like they will be heading north. This is extremely dangerous. It will be confusing for any traffic coming up on them while they make this obscenely incompetent and ill conceived manoeuver.

On a side note, it boggles my mind how poor most people are at backing up... It is a truly important skill needed for entering a roadway as well as navigating a parking lot. The whole roadways width is not there for you to back up into. Only the lane that you plan on driving forward on is for you to back up into.

there is nothing wrong with how he is parking... How he is getting onto the street for the direction of travel intended... That is flat out WRONG... Not open to the claim of opinion.

As for me doing something stupid? Sure thing. I have the talent to fall UP stairs and never down. I, however, don't drive like I walk...

I'll start this reply with I am not siding with your neighbor just giving a possible reason for his route. In your drawing, it shows street parking right across from his driveway. Maybe he is not confident he will miss the vehicles parked on the street. He may rather buy you a new mail box than have to pay to fix someones car and have insurance rates go up.Only possible thing I could think of. Maybe he has already backed into a car parked there once before and he doesn't trust his driving skills to reverse more carefully?

Here's my 2 cents.
I picked up the habit to reverse into my driveway as well since my first car, a '97 Civic, had a weird transmission thing where it would be very hard to get it into reverse when the car, and all of its fluids, were cold.
It was near impossible to reverse it and go to school in the morning. So I started to reverse into the driveway when the transmission was warm and went into gear normally.

I learned to back up with delivery vans that lacked a rear view mirror.
All I had was the side view mirrors ... and I knew MY life depended on them to track traffic around me, and obstacles between myself and my delivery.

Best hypothesis yet. However it does lead to a couple of conclusions... Either they need to get a car with active reverse sensors and camera or they likely should stop driving. If you can't manage your car at 5mph in reverse, I am mortified to see how they deal with their 2 ton missile at highway speeds or anything over 20mph for that matter...

it's a 2017 bmw 3 series so I'm guessing it should have sensors and all that fancy stuff? If he has those then it really isn't a matter of fearing he might back into anything
