128GB is your issue... most likely it is not correctly formatted to Fat32.:dunno:

Typically, at least on a WINDOWS PC, windows can only format Fat32 to max size of 32 GB.
Either use a 32GB or even a 16GB USB stick ,,16GB is more than big enough to hold the Garmin map update.

Note: The 32 GB limit for Fat32 is an artificial Windows limit in the windows Format program - probably to encourage the switch to HFS file system.

Some format utilities will be able to format FAT32 greater than 32GB, as can the Android Operating system -- but it's far easier to KISS, and just use a 16GB Flash drive.
Damn I forgot about the FAT limit. Is a 8gb large enough? I only have 128 and 8 laying around.

question for your guys -- I did the 2019 maps successfully about 5 months ago (formatted the thumb drive and followed all the directions etc.). been working great. here's the question -- i saved the thumb drive and haven't used it for anything since. do i have to do the reformat and plug into the CTR again to prep the thumb drive again to do the 2020 maps? or can i skip that step and just reuse the thumbdrive and load the 2020 maps onto it (as it's been 'initialized' to know my CTR from the 2019 map upgrade) and then plug into the CTR and upgrade to the 2020 maps and save an entire time wasting step?

i don't want to corrupt my Nav system so I'm asking here first! thanks!

Todd
For my last 2 updates, I skipped the “initialize the thumb drive” step. I just fire up Garmin Express every now and then. As soon as there is an update available, I load it onto the thumb drive and then install it in the car.

8gb should be ok. The update was only 3gb, I'm not sure if it was compressed or not when copied to the flash drive.

Error downloading the update in the Garmin app with anything I use now. Ended up emailing Garmin.

FAT32 is limited to 2TB, not 32GB. Sector size is limited to 32GB, hence the name FAT32.

HFS is an Apple filesystem that Windows doesn't even come with write drivers for out of the box.

The easiest thing to do (and what I did) is KISS and format your 128GB drive to 16 GB FAT32 partition with ~112 GB unpartitioned, or even partitioned as anything else. You absolutely don't need to go out and buy a new drive, As long as there's a 16 GB FAT32 partition on the drive and that's the partition you're using, the map updater is happy.
My error, I said HFS, when I should have said NTFS

I thought I said that the default windows OS cannot format Fat 32 bigger that 32GB.
That was my main point ...
No mention of 2TB etc etc .. so that's not in dispute.

Please, How do you Partition a USB Flash drive ??? (on a PC ) ??

I tried this yesterday and couldn't get it to work. I did the 2019 maps update last year, and it worked fine. Used the same 16GB flash drive this time, but couldn't get Garmin Express to recognize it on my computer. Not sure what the issue is.

A 16GB would only work for me, nothing else.

Did you do the following?:
1. Format the USB stick for FAT32
2. Download the info from the car
3. Follow the steps in Garmin Express
4. Plug usb stick into car and update

If you're on a work PC you may have issues with permissions and/or other software blocking the Garmin download.

I did all of the above, and as noted, I am using a 16GB flash drive. I used my home computer, which is an iMac. When I tried Step 2, I was prompted to remove the flash drive from the car after just a few seconds, but left it in for 2-3 minutes because the Garmin instructions said leave it in at least one minute. Then when I started Garmin Express on my computer, it looked for the flash drive but never found it.

When you plug the stick in after downloading the info from the car does it mount the device? Did you let it mount before firing up the Garmin app? If you did both then I would try a re-install of the Garmin app. Everything you've done appears right from what I can tell. The only instance I had of Garmin not detecting the drive was when I tried to use a 8gb stick. It doesn't recognize anything under 16gb.

Yes to both questions. That's what's so weird, since I downloaded the last map update and it worked fine. I'm just going to contact Garmin. Thanks for the help!

I didn’t have your issue but mine loads to about 96% then says map install failed. Tried twice and no dice.

Edit - it has to be a 16gb stick which is dumb.

I figured it out. It had nothing to do with the size of the USB drive. It was a simple user error on my end. I missed the part where the car needed to be on from start to finish. I kept turning the car off after the first step where the USB is first inserted to the car. It took less than 25 minutes after that haha

I was able to reuse my 128 GB Flash Drive to update the 2020 maps.

I didn't do anything to it other than plug it into my Mac.

Will the dealership make these updates if you ask them?
