You know, for my old 335is the walnut blasting was necessary. But the accords that are DI have never had an issue...
And my friend has had his for a long time.

So i dont think its absolytely necessary like that of BMW but i have no facts to back myzelf up unfortunately

The previous gen accords with DI earthdream motors didn't have turbos. Seems to be more of an issue with modern DI turbos and carbon buildup.

At how many miles did you get it blasted on the 335?

I've heard that Ford Hyundai and and I would assume now Honda had figured out how to manage carbon buildup. I know German enginers/managment are often too arrogant to adopt someone elses ideas. I suspect walnut blasting isn;t nessesary on the new BMW 2.0T and doubtful it is on the Civic.

Only cases where you might have an issue is lots of short trips in cold weather without any long highway runs and lots of idling. But even then, the smaller displacement of the engine should allow it to heat up faster and run under greater load. The problem will likely be worse on an engine that runs at very low load compared to it's capability.

Out Audi 2.0T have 120k miles when we traded it in and I don't think it was ever walnut blasted. The 3.2 DI engine however had this issue.

I think it's more an issue again, with larger performance based engines that are relatively uneconomical at low loads.

I"ve heard it was needed about every 40k.

... he electronic thermostat and elec. water pumps also lasted only 70-150k. I replaced my thermostat at 65k before I unloaded it. Water pump was probably only a year or so away. Total BS. Although in cold weather it crazy fast. It also guzzled gas in cold weather too. Probably 2x the fuel consumption of our CRV or Civic at idle and low speeds when cold.

The forced induction ones are direct injection while the normally aspirated ones are port injection.

DI stands for Direct Injection - which is how the fuel is delivered to the piston chambers.

The motor is the L series motor (if you have the Turbocharged civic, which you have) or K series if you have the NA.

I want to get this done in the short future as I like to maintain my car for the long term. Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost of this service? Thanks in advance

If you're worried about carbon buildup in your DI engine, take a look at this AAA study which compared gasoline brands. They found that the detergent in 'Top Tier' brand gas leaves 16x less carbon deposits in your engine. They ran some test cars for 4000 miles on Top Tier brand vs other brands, then took the engines apart. The pictures of the cylinders paint a pretty clear picture. The study concluded that your gasoline brand is worth considering.

I now only buy at Top Tier stations like Shell or Esso just in case. I don't know if I'll ever need a full walnut blast, but I'll have a tech do a scope after I get a few more years on the car.
