So my dealership has recently offered me an upgrade to the Type R but I’d be looking at about an extra $200 a month for the car.

I currently have the Si and was planning to do some basic bolt-ons in the near future but now I’m curious as to whether just going to the Type R would be a better option.

Are there any previous Si owners who upgraded to the Type R? Thoughts? Opinions? Is it worth the extra money?

I am not a previous SI owner but from everything I’ve read, they’re almost two completely different cars

If you can swing it financially, the type R is without question the better car

If you can’t, I’d stick with the SI as it’s still very impressive

Keep in mind, the Type R isn’t just an Si with more horsepower. You can’t just add hp with add-ons and get a TypeR.

I had a 2015 Si that I traded in on the type R. I was very happy with my Si but wanted the bigger better car. The Si had a better OEM exhaust sound by far, the R is fairly quiet. The interiors are basically identical just like any Civic. The seats in the R are comfy and similar to the Si. Just more refined and with bolsters. If you are a larger person the seats can be snug if not to tight. There is a definite power gain and performance feel going to the type R. I personally don't see much difference in the type Rs modes. I know some say they can feel the differences but to me they are so subtle that it even having modes seems pointless. The Si you dont need to spend any money to have a great car. The R is a great car but you will find yourself still wanting to spend money on it for wheels and exhaust. If you are gonna track your car or have places to go out and legally (LOL) open it up then the R is Yes a better performance car. However around town and with just going to the grocery store and driving in traffic. ... not so much of a difference. If most of your driving life is 80 to 90 percent just a daily grind I would seriously go test drive one first. There really is not much difference with daily drives other than emotional. I also think this is why you see so many people trading back out of the type Rs so quickly. They buy into the hype and then realize well unless you track it and spend a fortune on it, it really is no different then any other daily driver when used as a daily driver.

Now if you got the cash to mod and take it out racing. By all means the car is excellent and a great track car. I would say definite buy. If you are gonna stretch your budget just to have a "type r" for daily. I would say do not do it.

Oh and the stereo in the R basically blows. If you hate music then you will like its stereo LOL

If you an afford it, get it. It's a 1000x better than the Si except for gas mileage lol

I do know how different the Type R is from the Si, I'm just curious if it is a positive difference overall vs a negative difference and would paying the extra amount be worth that difference.

Don't think in terms of monthly payments. That's a great way to stay in debt forever.

Hold on to your Si until you're not upside down on it, meaning that you can sell it on CL or trade it in and get exactly how much you owe on it. Maybe you make double payments to make that happen faster.

Whatever you do, don't just trade in your Si with a ton of negative equity into a Type R. There's no reason to owe $47,000 on a Type R.
I'm not only thinking about monthly payments. That is just the difference it would cost on a monthly basis in relation to the Si but I wouldn't have any negative equity in the upgrade.

I bought a 2017 Si new and ended up having to give it to another family member. After spending months looking for another car I ended up buying a CTR. Best purchase I ever made! Love the car. Night and day difference. IF, however, I drove 30 minutes to work everyday as I've done in the past, and put 15000 miles on the car versus the 4k-5k I do now, I would prefer an Si. I have no reason to upgrade the CTR, but I did the Si, other than tires. If I do end up doing track on a regular basis, I will want track tires. That said though, the ownership cost of a CTR is significantly higher than an Si. Much more expensive tires that have to be replaced every 5k-10k, worse gas mileage, insurance etc. If I drove my car every day, the Si would make a lot more sense. I would have a couple rather than a sedan as well, just for family use. That's the one thing I like about my CTR over my Si is the room.

This is complete bollocks. If you're a thumper and require the the windows to shake,and that's you're only requirement for a "good stereo" then yes. It blows. The difference in the Si stereo and the R is the sound deadening. They are the same sound system. My Si initially sounded better and I was very confused. I did a little research and decided to install sound deadening and it sounds amazing. I love music of all kinds...except most things that require throbbing bass...so take my opinion for what you paid for it. Adding sound deadening really woke up everything. You can hear the mids and lows sooo much better without cranking it up over the road noise. The CTR is a track car first. So not a lot of bells and whistles in some respects. I love my CTR, but it's not for everyone.

Seriously. Love both cars. In a different life, I would never have bought the CTR. I'm glad I did because it works for me, but I wouldn't want to use it on a daily basis. It's too...what's the word...fragile maybe...and expensive to own. I say that because I've already replaced one rim and had curb rash replaced on another. I've had the car 8 months and without rim insurance would be $1500 down in tires and rims, and I've never had that issue with any car I've ever owned. Sitting at just over 4k miles, I realize I'm not too far off from replacing $1400 in tires.

Depends how much you want the Type R

Negatives:
Tires cost more for the Type R - only last up to 16,000km if you decide to stick with OEM
Gas mileage is worse than the Si
Overheating problems at the track

Positive:
Insurance didn't go up going from Si to Type R (But I guess this varies on where you live)
I find it a lot more fun to drive than the Si
Handling/Suspension is infinitely better than the Si
Doesn't tucker out at the top end, pulls to redline
The 3 dampening modes actually make a big difference compared to Si
More trunk space
Easier to make more power

Like everything with the R its subjective. I actually do not listen to bass music. I.prefer rock. I had to add subs just to get a little punch. But there are thousands owners out there who will agree the stereo is far from premium. To some its fine to others crap. Depends on your ears and taste. Just like the driving modes. I dont see much if any difference in them, others swear each one is night and day. But back to the stereo. Have you not seen the threads on complete tear downs, and the uncountable complaints about it? But to each their own.

Yes I have. And most of those seem to complain about the fact you can’t get it loud enough or not enough base. You said yourself you wanted more “punch”. I also tested the car you just bought and it’s stereo, even premium, isn’t much brag about.

There also uncountable threads bitching and whining about every aspect of the car. It’s too quiet. It’s too stiff. It’s too rice boy styling...

Oh no , you are correct sir. The premium stereo in the mustang aint nothing to brag about either. Im not after bass per say. But want something that sounds like the sub actually works lol. Honestly no premium stereo is very premium.

And I agree its all personal taste. And thanks, so far im enjoying it. I will most likely revisit a R in the future. Still love them.

I had success in using Viper4Android in getting the bass improved by quite a bit as a free mod instead of upgrading the system.

I own a 2017 type R, while my dad recently bought a 2019 Si sedan (that I drive from time to time). I also came from a 2015 Si sedan before the type R.

TBH, whether it's worth it to you will depend largely on what you are looking for. If you want an excellent daily (good MPGs/decent fun factor) then I'd honestly say that the Si is the perfect car. But since it looks like you were planning on doing bolt-ons to the Si anyways, so maybe the practicality isn't a huge deal to you?

If performance is your priority, then I'd say that the type R is worth the upgrade. Under 3k rpm, both cars feel very similar but I feel like what sets them apart is what happens after the 3000-3500k rpm mark. The R just seems to come alive after that compared to the Si. I also feel like there's a perfect balance of driving mechanics that comes out of the box in the type R that can't be achieved with just throwing bolt-ons/springs on the Si. It's hard to explain in words for me but the heavier steering feels great and with +R mode, I feel really stable going fast on some hard corners. Doesn't even feel like a FWD car to me.

Of course it's all subjective and I'm totally biased since the type R was my affordable dream car. But definitely see if there's a used type R you can test drive and decide for yourself.

That all said, the Si is still a VERY solid car and is much more practical. I would actually much prefer taking out my dad's Si for daily duty.

Financially, in addition to factoring the extra 200/month I would also factor in having to invest 2-3k into a new wheel/tire combo. The OEM tires are around 1000-1200/set and only last 12-15k miles from my experience. You also might want a backup wheel/tire combo for winter too since it looks like you're in Canada.

I just did it 3 weeks ago. I think the Si was alot more fun. You can easily afford to build, you can tune and the dealer will never know, and there are parts that actually improve the temperatures of the engine. When driving spirited the si has alot more gears to row through before your risking jail time.
That said I love the R just cant tune until I'm out of warranty because i cant afford to just buy a new motor if it blows. The handling is out of this world imo. Tires are over 300 a piece btw. Cant even put on an aftermarket intake unless you want to lose power for sounds.
