Since we live in an age where everyone is offended by something, I want to make sure I'm keeping in line. I've seen the terms "ricer" or "ricey" used on this forum to describe cars that are aesthetically overdone.

Are those terms offensive to Asians?
Nah it ain't offensive at all lol

You restrict your speech for the sake of feeling of others. Forever an awful deal.

Tell them that you'll feel offended if you can't say what you want and now both parties are in feelings vs feelings.

I think its respectful that you don't want to offend anyone, wish there were more people like that, on the other hand, it offends me when people come here and won't speak English, but they don't give a shit.

I believe that's what they call being 'polite' and having 'manners'.
For example; If I meet someone and instantly think they are stupid, I usually will "restrict" my speech by not telling them I think they are stupid. Because 1.) I am not an asshole, and 2.) maybe I'm wrong and they are not as dumb as their initial impression gave me.

I have often wondered the same thing, so thanks for asking, and thanks to all who have replied .. I am now a lot wiser .. but will chose NOT to use the term myself. - (my Personal choice - Free speech etc etc etc)

Ricer is definitely an old term and was only ever meant as a slam on the owner and never on Japan or any other nation or people. Most Asian auto makers sold fast looking cars that were mostly anything but. This is mostly not a thing or is only reserved to the base model of any given Asian model as more and more cars have much more power than they ever used to 20 or more years ago (Or at least their power to weight ratios are better)

As for offending anyone, I have only EVER thought it offended the owner of the riced out car. And even though I live in Canada, I live in an area where there are quite a few people of Asian decent. Never had anyone ever look at me funny. But really, the word is only ever used in the company of car enthusiasts anyhow.

Also, I am half French and could care less if someone called me a frog. Words only have power if you let them.

No problem. I was beginning to think I was being too sensitive.

@frontlinegeek I have never heard that slur. Wow.
Definitely known in New Brunswick, Quebec, eastern Ontario, Europe and likely to a small extent down in New Orleans. It is a British slang term based off of the French inclination to eat frogs. It could be dying out though as it has been a long time since I have heard it used in anything other than a joke/term of endearment between friends.

Rice eating Asian here, I have never considered "ricey" to be remotely offensive in a racial sense since "rice" is more referring to the origin of the vehicle in question's manufacturer rather than a term that has ever applied to people. The only people who would ever be offended by that term would be insecure drivers of said "ricey" vehicles (who are people of all colors and backgrounds).

Actually, making the association of the term "ricey" to Asian people as opposed to impractical cosmetic modifications on base model economy cars is a lot more offensive (just messing around, I respect your efforts to be socially conscious but rest assured you're not going to find anyone offended by it so it's not worth worrying about).

Filipino here. Yes, I'm on the side that considers Filipinos as Asians. idgaf about its use. I've used it to refer to riced out cars, myself. I could give 2 shits less if my non-asian friends use it in that manner
If people don't consider Filipinos Asians, what do they consider them?

Some say, "they/we're not Asian. We're Pacific Islanders" just had that debate with another Filipino co-worker, and she is on that side

Actually, "RICER" is derived from the Latin Ricarius, and has nothing to do with the food rice, or anyone that may eat it !!!

ricer
(Ricer: from the latin word Ricarius meaning to suck at everything you attempt)

A person who makes unnecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster. The most common modifications are (but not limited to):

- Huge exhaust that serves no purpose but to make the car louder
- Large spoiler on the back that looks like something Boeing made for the 747
- Lots of after-market company stickers they don't have parts from, but must be cool
- Expensive rims that usually cost more than the car itself
- Bodykit to make the car appear lower, usually accented with chicken wire
- Clear tail lights and corner signals
- A "performace intake"- a tube that feeds cold air to their engine usually located in areas of excessive heat (behind or on top of the engine)

- Most of these riced cars (a.k.a. rice rockets or rice burners) are imports; Honda Civics, Accords, Integras, CRXs, RSXs, Del Sols Mitsubishi Eclipses, Lancers, Subaru Imprezas, however there are some domestics such as Chevrolet Caviliers, Dodge Neons, Ford Focus; small, slow, economy cars designed specifically to go slow. Please note that some Supras, Skylines, WRX's and other higher performance imports are designed to go fast, and are therfore not always considered rice. It really depends on the severity of the case.

The "ricer" attempts to make their car "performance" by adding the modifications listed above. These ricers are not confined to any one ethnic group or color, however different ethnic groups are known for certain styles.
Honda Civics with big spoilers and 4" exhaust tips are considered to be ricers.

Geez, I haven't heard that term since the early '80's when Toronto had an influx of Anglo's after the 1980 referendum.

Anyhow, "rice" is not derogatory in an automotive context. However, "jap" and "nip" will get people's backs up regardless of usage, especially in the USA.
