Well fellow R owners the day has come. I have been a honda owner for many years and the Type R was my 4th Civic. I loved the R as may of you have seen for my posts. I was one of the first owners of one in the USA having taken delivery of mine 2 days before official sale in 2017 and bringing number 141 home. So 2 years and 3 months later why am I selling the R? Well it is a great car, however a number of things bothered me which are subjective so wont go into them here. Mostly though the traffic, oh my god the traffic here has become unbearable. Most everyday you sit and crawl and it takes 2 hours to go 15 miles. then the weekends are even worse with the highways backed up for 20 miles. The manual in this environment just became unbearable.
Money, I make a great living but. in order to make the R a great car ...money... more money... and then.. wait more money. I just wanted a car that was fast and amazing without having to always spend money on it. I know for some going right out and spending 2k plus for new wheels is nothing but but in my head, I shouldn't have to go out and spend 2k on a new car to make it nicer. again this is all subjective just part of my reasoning.
And this is a bit petty I guess but there is zero import scene here. I mean zero, if anything there is almost hatred of imports here in good old boy land. And for someone who loves cars and the social car culture it became isolating and made owning the car sorta no fun. I know people will say who cares what others think, but in reality what others think plays on us all and what we do. It's why we dress how we do, it's why we have the friends we do and it's why we cut our hair and present ourselves certain ways. Its just more fun when your part of a group instead of always searching for others. And the Rs scarcity made finding others rough in my area anyway.
But lastly, I really wanted to return to a big grunty comfy v8 I sort of missed them. Plus if they tone down the Type Rs styling ( my opinion) I can always return to one
Those are part of my reasons, they are mine, you might not agree but there it is LOL
And when I told my better half I basically got the same look from her that the cat gave me when I told her the R was going.
If you are one of the ones interested in the deal I made and trade ill put details at bottom of post but for now...
The Deconstruction of a Dream.
So I got the call, they found me the car I wanted and I needed to be ready to trade in a few days, but I needed to have the car back to full OEM spec by then. Oh god , have you followed my post? This is gonna be a chore. Time to call up my Friend (mechanic) who charges fair prices (Mcdonalds) who is highly knowledgeable (internet how to videos) that cuts me a break cause I help ( mostly I watch because I have no clue) and lets get this thing done.
First I had to bribe him as he also once owner a type R I was I need help here I'll give you these. Red Type R hotwheels and my Type R key fob cover that fits his Ridgeline fob.
So he was on board, mostly because i said I wouldn't bother him with doing work on my new car LOL. Na hes a super nice guy and a good pal.
Then we started the deconstruction. I have no words just some pictures of the sad event. Here we do the Intercooler. and taking apart the front end is actually fairly simple.
And back to OEM
Here is a few of that beep beep OEM horn for those who are curious.
Next the Mishimoto intake. Not as many pics of that process.
I dropped ball on photos but the intake is back OEM at this point.
Now the Exhaust.
Ans back to OEM
OH my God its so quiet now. That OEM exhaust is sooooo quiet.
Now the motor mount.
Thank god for friends that can win limbo competitions cause my fat butt ain't fittin under there.
Wow I forgot how smooth the engine ran before I put that mount on.
So now the mechanics are back to OEM and I thank my buddy with yup you guessed it McDonalds. I tried to buy him real food but he refused. I did slip him some cash though IM not that cheap.
So now for the Part I do at home. Not a lot of photos here but I got a few. First I took out the Kicker underseat subs. there were two and the wires were ran everywhere so took a bit.
They aint much to look at but they do the job if you want to save interior space, fit right under seat and give a real nice thump. I know some of the reviews are eh on these but I took a chance and they been in 3 cars now and about to go into the 4th. And I have had zero issues with them and they sound great. But they came out nonetheless.
Next my throttle controller. No pics of that, basically a lot of wire unrouting and unplugging.
Untune the car and return to factory ecu and unlock the flashpro from car.. Sad..
Then put the rear wiper back on after I deleted it not long ago
Put the factory Orange side markers back on and removed my smoked ones. Ill miss my Smoked markers.
And lastly. The removal of the vinyl. Amazing about 600 bucks just balls up to the size of a softball and gets thrown away.. I didn't take picture of the removal but here are some of the vinyl I removed.
Well thats it shes back full OEM except one little thing. Which Ill tell the new owner other then that its a secret
So now onto the new car what did I get? Well some of you have a really good Idea from my other posts I made.
But first some info, so I wanted a particular set of options and this really limited my choices of car. Not that the options were hard the combination of them was for some reason. So I had 7 dealers all looking. I was flexible on color which helped a lot. Finally after a week one dealer finally found two cars within a 300 mile radius that matched what I wanted. One was a color that was a definite no the other was not my first choice but livable because it had the options I wanted. Next trade value. Ok I just gonna say it, pull the bandaid off as fast as I can. The R dose not have the trade value owners expect or think it does. I tried at 17 dealers not one would give me over 31 for it. and there are hundreds around selling used for 33 to 35 depending on year. So I accepted 31 trade. I know people say oh private party... eh not around here. The hassle isn't worth the extra 1k if it even sells. especially since finance companies are involved.
Sooo anyway IM not hinky about money so I dont care what people know what I spent or paid.. Here is my window sticker from the new car... you ready... Im gonna hear a collective grown from the forum on this one LOL.
So Yes I finally got the Automatic and basically a living room on wheels. The Active exhaust is real Nice. But like anything I got a deal. And with some screw ups on the dealers part I actually sorta came out good on trade. 31k for R and then got free tint and wheel locks plus an additional 1k cash. after all was said and done im only financing 28k on the mustang at 0% and with lifetime engine and transmission warranty included free. Best of all with ford, any mods are warranted as long as a dealer installs them Supercharger here I come.
Oh I guess yall want to see the car hu?
After I took it home , I clayed it sealed the paint, then put an acrylic layer on it.
The wheels are the only option I didn't want but was hard to find what I did so I actually got the wheel upgrade for a discount. But my buddy has the all black performance wheels hes gonna give me so very near future the wheels will be black.
Well that's about it, the saga of the R is over for me. My parts will be listed soon in the classifieds. I guess I need to start new threads : A day in the life of an EX R owner. Its been fun and I enjoy the friends i made Ill still see ya round the cars and coffees Im not going anywhere.
Oh and for those who have always read my threads My type R is a muscle car LOL
