Last winter I was in the debate on buying a gti or si. I wanted the gti but the price was way too much. To get a lsd and the adaptive suspension you were looking at 10k+ extra for the car. Had to be the autobahn edition. I'm not crazy about the styling on the Hyundais even though I knew the N had a lot of r&d go into it and I planned on going to the track. The si has been perfect. Reliable and fun, cheap on matinence, and the best looking of the 3(si coupe). I'd do it again if I had the same options. Actually wanted the Audi S3 but they dont have a manual and matinence is too much $$.

Now that you can get a manual GTI SE w/ adaptive suspension and Fender audio, for like $29k discounted, it's pretty attractive. Same for the Jetta Autobahn at $26k.

Agree the coupe is the best looking body style - don't like the look of the sedan, even in Si form.

Performance/Speed:

GTI (tie): They thought power was very good, but it didnt blow them away.

Si (tie): Didnt feel slower than the GTI, they attributed this to it being almost 400lbs lighter.

N(1st): This was the faster car than the other two to them. They felt the power advantage right away and loved the. all.
Did they run real instrumental testing for the acceleration or was it just based on their butt feeling?

Just watched the full episode on Amazon Prime and here is pretty much the sum up of it...Their were two presenters and each had their own rating on which car was the best in each category and which car was the winner overall..

Interior:

GTI (1st): More premium, more quirky with the plaid seats, and much more cozy.

Si (3rd): They loved the agressive yet comfortable seats, loved the return of the volume knob

N (2nd): They loved how simple and easy everything is laid out, especially the on the fly N mode customization

Performance/Speed:

GTI (tie): They thought power was very good, but it didnt blow them away.

Si (tie): Didnt feel slower than the GTI, they attributed this to it being almost 400lbs lighter.

N(1st): This was the faster car than the other two to them. They felt the power advantage right away and loved the engine response.

Handling:

GTI (3rd): They were let down by the soft handling and "cheap" rear end feel. Felt it was too dialed in for comfort and lacked engagement. They also didnt like the steering feel and overall they wanted more and just weren't getting it.

Si (2nd): They thought in "normal" mode it was a little wallowy in tight turns but once in Sport mode they liked its tightness, steering feel, and eagerness to handle corners. They felt it was the best of both worlds..tighter and stiffer than the GTI but less compromising than the N.

N (1st): One of the best handling front wheel drive cars they have driven. They were shocked on how good a front drive chassis could be and called it a Fiesta ST on steroids.

Conclusion/results:

GTI (3rd): Came in last place by both presenters. They thought it was too soft, not as engaging, lacked the "special sauce" and just didnt inspire as much fun.

Si (2nd, 1st): Came in 2nd by one presenter and 1st by the other presenter. The presenter that placed it 2nd thought it was a great all arounder but the Veloster N was just such a dynamically engaging driving machine for not that much more money so he couldnt justify the Si as the winner. The presenter that chose the Si as the winner picked the Si because it could balance fun and practicality better than the other two.

N (1st, 2nd): Came in 1st by one presenter and 2nd by the other. 1st because of its near perfect front drive chassis and fun powerful engine..2nd because the Si was the better all arounder that could do it all.
Im surprise by the result of this comparo. Actually based on all the face to face that i have seen comparing the GTI to the SI, this is the one where the SI performed best

They did and this was the result: 0-60

N: 5.9 seconds
GTI: 6.4 seconds
Si: 6.8 seconds

They said something along the lines of "the Si doesnt feel out of pace here even with it's lower HP numbers, that can be attributed to its almost 400 lbs less of mass compared to the GTI"

Makes sense, the GTI was a manual and the 2nd gear goes way past 60mph so you only have to shift once, the Si you have to shift twice to 60mph..if gearing were longer the Si might have tied the GTI to 60, .4 seconds difference could be attributed to that second shift.

The problem with this comparo is that the N is a middle child... doesn’t compete with the Honda CTR and is a little above the Si and GTI. Not really a fair comparison. No, the N line Elantra would be a closer comparison to the Si. That being said, I’ve smoked every Elantra N that I’ve encountered.

Thank you for the info
I agree for the second shift before 60 although the Hp advantage of the GTI and N give them the advantage above 60 mph as the trap speed at the end of the 1/4 mile shows

Car and Driver:

2017 GTI (Manual):
0-60: 5.9 seconds
1/4 mile: 14.6 seconds @ 100mph

2017 Si:
0-60: 6.3 seconds
1/4 mile: 14.8 seconds @ 96mph

You can see the same .4 second difference to 60mph, again I suspect because of the second shift..the Si closes the gap a bit in the quarter mile. The GTI traps higher but not by much. Even though the GTI is the faster car, I can see why one wouldn't feel it with the butt dyno.

That’s why I said DSG is king!

Whenever I saying my GTI was faster and better overall I had a DSG which makes an average driver like my self have perfect launches everytime. And if you turn off the traction control the wheels don’t spin to much before pulling you forward super hard. Especially with stickier rubber.

I haven’t driven the manual enough to really have a great comparison but would probably lean towards Si just from the few 100 miles I’ve driven the GTI Manual.

Can't believe a stock Si is doing 0-60 in 6.3 seconds. Heck I can't believe how quick my Sport is.

I wonder how Subaru is doing with their 9 second Imprezas?
