Maybe a kill switch with a timer. That way the thieves drive away from you, leaving you safe. But maybe a mile down the road the car stops & maybe/hopefully the bad guys get stranded, at least for awhile.

Worse advice ever. If he was cc, they would have shot him when he went for it, and then we'd have a dead victim and another stolen firearm on the street. The only way a ccp works is if you're not the victim but a bystander.
That is so false it's not even funny. You've been watching to much CNN.

Yeah, some people definitely watch way too much CNN.

Living in Baltimore and some other nicer US cities, when holding your wax in one hand, I guess you should hold a piece in the other...

"Not worth it over a car...." Yes, but guess what, you are lucky when it's just over the car but it's not always about the car, and you don't know what it's about until it's way too late...

These people were carjacked at their apartment complex parking lot, and then raped, tortured and killed. CNN didn't make much fuss about it.

Police records are public information.
Many cities even publish maps of every crime, or attempted crime, in a easily accessible manner.

You don’t need to rely on news coverage or lack there of from any source to know specifically what “the truth” is about crimes.

One could easily compile data of every time a gun was used in self defense across the nation to prove firmly that they are used routinely to protect oneself and others.

Yet even the NRA falls back on arguments around individual rights rather than any actual data.

You have a strong belief that a gun improves your safety but there is no evidence for it either way.

In large part because of a federal ban on gun research in places for decades now.

Which leaves people with only anecdotes and speculation.

So it may be your routinely upheld right to own a gun.
It may also be your firmly held conviction that it makes you and others around safer.

But outside of simply what you personally believe, even though there are huge amounts of public information to sift through that could actually inform action and policy, there is nothing but talking points.

.......
Not going into a gun dispute, but like most people, I never in my life went to police records or any other source to research crime statistics or learn about what happened. I also don't plan such activities for the future. I only know about crime when the media report it and I would like to continue to rely solely on news media coverage in this matter.

I'm sorry for your loss. Glad to hear that you were not hurt. I hope your civic will get recovered soon without any damage or the insurance will pay for the loss.

I'm glad that where I live, car thieves only pick very expensive cars, so there is no fear if you drive a Honda.
And I don't even know if carjacking like this really exists here. Most of the time luxurious cars getting stolen at night, out of the owners garage, no need to point a gun at someone. :(

If you don't have your CC get it. You don't get lucky twice.
Good luck getting a CC in libtard Maryland!

To the OP: That is Baltimore for you! You should know what I am talking about since you live there. I lived there for years and IT IS A SHITHOLE!

Been to Baltimore a couple times in the past few months for business, and man i'm sorry but it really is a shithole. No offense to anyone who lives there or anything, but even by just visiting I could tell immediately that crazy shit happens there. Don't even get me started on the drivers there, i've had way too many close calls with people just not following the lane markers and cutting me off with inches to spare. Anyways, glad you're safe OP, that situation could have gone south easily but luckily you played it cool. A CC in that situation wouldn't have done any good imo, because reaching for the gun itself is already extremely risky and they could just shoot you then and there. And even if you were to get your gun out, it just escalates the situation beyond what's necessary, and chances are the person pointing the gun at you is more likely to pull the trigger than you are. Not much you can do in a situation like that besides cooperate and let them take your car.

Really scary story. As others said just let them do their s**t and wait for the insurance fix the problem for you. Aside from the car loss, which is easily replaced, the fear will stay much longer.
I am happy to live in a very safe place where nothing really happens.

The thing about the Civic is that it has a very rare economic distinction of being both incredibly common but also fairly desirable.

I bought one of the earliest 10th gens to come on the market in Nov 2015 and I’ve never ever ever had guys stop me on the street to talk about my car. It was unnerving personally.

What is a point of pride for some of you is also what makes it an easy sell for eBay and chop shop parts for others. Something I’ve loved about my much older Honda’s and Toyota’s in the past and realized wasn’t the case for other brands.
General economic theory would say that something that is common loses value but Civics defy that idiom in a way I had no idea I was buying into. I was just buying a good car I wanted.

The aspect of this particular story that draws people to commenting on it is that they can relate to their own personal welfare being in danger.

But overall, if you’re looking at car thefts in general, replicating wireless key fob signals seems to be the spreading model, since current cars have no defense against them.
It’s just taken some time for car thieves to catch up on passing the tech around.

With one in hand there was no need to even stick up on the OP in person at all.

Your car would simply be gone later.

That. Doesn’t require living someplace “bad” or “dangerous”. No chance to John Wick it away the bad guy.

Just someone with intention casually coming back later. Which can be anywhere. In fact someplace with fewer people around would be ideal.

This.

Honestly the OP was extremely lucky to leave unharmed. Complacency doesn't always result in no physical harm. I've seen people get stabbed, shot, taken hostage, beaten to death etc over a car, cell phone, 50 bucks etc while being 100% complacent. The bottom line is, these people are animals. They dont think like normal people and if they think they can get away with it they will harm and or kill you. That being said, dont be a hero and draw or act If you're not confident in your ability to defend yourself. Glad you made it out ok OP best of luck moving forward.

You are confusing different things. From the OP description, he was not robbed by car thieves. Yes, they took the car, because they wanted it at that time, but these were not the people who fiddle with electronics or plan their actions. So a likelihood of having a car stolen by car thieves at night has very little in common with this type of attack by casual criminals. Carjacking and car theft are really quite different crimes.

So you'd rather they hold up your wife at gun point than just hop in the car and take it without confrontation?
No matter what I tell her, she won't listen. Thankfully it's not common in suburbia.

A common ploy here is two or more people working together. They distract the driver with some BS story while another snags the purse off the front seat.

Around here if they want the car, they usually confront you with a gun. They have no idea if the car is locked until they try it. Lately it's been a carload of armed people doing the carjacking, so being outnumbered it's probably best to comply. Most of us (me included) would probably just give them the key and then have the cops drive us home to change our underwear.

We have millenial anti-theft, so I don't know what would happen if they find out they can't drive it.

i would've gave them the keys, opened up the door for them, and wished them a nice day. :) just be glad you're not on the side of the road still.
