Ok, so the past few days I have noticed a few peculiar things with my Driver Information Interface. You know, the part of the Tachometer / Speedometer display that shows things like the Fuel Range, Turbo Meter, Maintenance Minder, Radio Station, Audio Source, Phone calls, etc.

It suddenly, out of the blues while driving started doing things like randomly and sporadically showing "Hanging up" as if I had just disconnected a phone call, yet I was not actually on a phone call. It also randomly started showing the radio volume flashing it on the screen then off then on again, as if I had adjusted the volume, but I had not touched anything and the sound level didn't actually change. This happened about 3 or 4 times during the course of 8 or so days. Today it happened again and I then realized that when I DID adjust the volume or make a call, neither the volume nor phone call information would show. Changing of radio stations, audio source, etc had also stopped showing. Has anyone run into this yet?

Well, today I decided to reset the audio system in hopes that this would resolve the problem. That did it! No more random phantom displays or lack of displays when they SHOULD be there. So when in doubt, reset the audio system.

If you have found yourself having similar issues, just reset the audio system as follows:
  • Hold down the Audio Power button a few seconds (took mine 5 seconds)
  • At the prompt "Do you want to reboot" tap "Yes"

It will take about 30 seconds to a minute to go through the reboot process and come back to normal. There IS a setting that allows the system to reboot itself when idle (overnight, etc), but I have had that enabled since a week after purchasing the vehicle and that didn't help.

What a buggy audio system we have! I sure hope other things like my Honda Sensing don't start acting strange too! Now THAT would be a problem!

Thank you for sharing this information. I believe rebooting my audio system as you described above, fixed my issue. My car is 3 years old (2016 Civic EX - just out of warranty) and suddenly, when I started my car, the Driver Information area would stay blank. If I pressed the Info button on the steering wheel, it would then pop up and display everything, which was bizarre. It was erratic behavior. I just did the reset and I so far it seems to have fixed my issue. Thank you.

The Radio is an ANDROID system, which is meant to take care of its own memory management, and shut down task and apps that are no longer needed, but it is not 100% , and particularly this older version of Android does not do as good a job at this than the newer versions.

One GOOD thing with the Honda software, is that it is OPTIMIZED to start very quickly, far quicker than many of the more recent Aftermarket head units, but with that comes the penalty of not going a full re-boot each time you start the car, and thus tasks that have run and are no longer needed, are still resident and taking up memory, --ready to run quickly "IF" they are needed.

So, Occasionally, forcing the Head unit to do a COLD REBOOT, clears out all these old tasks, and typically, will result in the unit running a lot better, because it now has more available free memory, and does not have to keep deciding on what is old, and needs to be temporarily removed, when more memory is needed by a currently running task..

Occasionally may be once a month -- not a big deal to avoid Android memory management Glitches.

BTW: similar issue with older PC operating systems like XP !!! Occasionally need to re-boot those system, to get them to run smoothly !!

Glad that helped. The good thing is I haven't had that issue since the original post!

On a sad, painful (and unrelated) note, my front bumper got smashed in really bad at my wife's work parking garage (she now drives the Civic) this past Tuesday and the person that did it just drove off without notifying building security, leaving a note, nothing!. We've already gotten the security camera footage from the building's security which shows all in detail, tag number and all. GOTCHA!! She (the moron) hit it HARD to the point that the Civic moved almost a foot! She even got out of her TESLA to look at her car, so she was well aware of what she did. How can someone do that and just drive off and live with their conscience? We reported it to the local police and got the video footage to him, the officer stated she will be arrested likely tomorrow. I almost feel bad for her, I just want the Civic fixed, but I don't make the laws that apply to leaving the scene of an accident. Clearly she has insurance and can afford a $1200 or so repair, so why flee the scene? CARma you ignorant, moronic, entitled BIOTCH!! (Yes, I know it's Karma, just throwing in some humor)

Sorry. Venting complete. :)

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that detailed information about it. Good to know. Rebooting did fix my problem, so I'm all set.

Yes, very often if you take your car to the Dealer with this sort of problem, they will take it out the back, and all they do is a RE-boot. Very often that fixes the issue, at least for some time, and they appear to be miracle workers, and you end up paying them something stupid for what you could have done yourself in 30 seconds !!

I've had the volume popping up issue and also the radio station popping up whenever it feels like it. Been trying for six months to get it fixed and finally a different dealer is replacing the head unit next week.
Reboot, factory data reset, nothing fixed it.

New head unit didn't fix one issue I'm having, so either something else controls stuff in the head unit, or they are just pieces of junk.

That blows. Used to have to reboot once a week, it's gotten much more stable (dunno how/why?) over time. Mine's just slow at times...guess that's what Ice Cream Sandwich feels like in 2019.

NEW HEAD UNIT ???

Is that a NEW Display
or
A new Electronics Unit
or BOTH.

Issue could be in either, but more likely in the Touch screen display -- so I am wondering EXACTLY what parts(s) did they change ((if any !! )]

And if they actually did replace anything, was it with something NEW, or old and "re-conditioned". so someone else's old part they took off another car ??

Its a remanufactured audio unit only. I love how they take a 1200.00 part out of my car and replace it with a 307.00 remanufactured part.
Then they tell me I can't have ANY aftermarket stuff hooked up, no dash cam, no phone if I expect it to work correctly.

Maybe a bad cable or loose connection from the dash to HU? The car is reporting speed to the HU so that radio volume can be auto adjusted.
