I drive approximately 1200-1500 miles a week, over 65k in one year and I can assure you that you come out ahead at 58 cents/gallon.
My bad, you're right.

My only remaining point then is air travel is safer.

PS-I should get a job where I travel lol.

Thanks for all the feedback. Yes, I suppose you're right about the hours. It would be $600 for the 1,200 mile trip and and about $480 total in hours. I wasn't really looking at hours because if i wasn't driving them I would be flying or working them instead so the hours kind of wash. I'm leaning towards driving still but can reason for either way.
Hey... at least you have the freedom to chose whatever you want. That in itself is huge.

As a control freak who has gotten burned by airlines flying domestically and internationally, given the choice, I always drive. May take longer but I'm in complete control over stops, departure, arrival (general ballpark at least) and I know my bags will make it to my destination.
Amen to that. I always drive.

My stuff is with me, I can leave or stay at whim, and I have readily reliable transportation at my destination.

I gave up flying years ago (unless an ocean crossing is involved).
My last cross country flight turned out to be similar to riding an inner city transit bus....

I work for the largest industrial conveyer microwave OEM for 9 years now and really love the company. Love the freedom and travel. Get to fly around the world seeing places I'd never otherwise. Is why I drive an si fbo of course. Back doors for my son and daughter. Comfortable and efficient for long trips. Quick and fun to play in. When you're in your car for work all the time you have to enjoy it, and the si is so great and affordable and buildable it's a no brainier.

Do you pack a cooler? If so what do you recommend? Looking for 3-5 days ice retention in florida heat.

There's nothing worse than getting shut in at an airport when your flight is delayed/cancelled. Suddenly, you realize you could have driven in less time and not be treated like cattle. I'll drive from now on.

As someone who doesn’t mind long drives, more often then not, when choosing between flying and driving own car, I opted for neither and drove a rental car. It’s the cheapest for the employer and it doesn’t put miles on my car. Win win. No need to rent another car at destination. Plus I get to drive a lot of new, often very nice cars. If you on the other hand opt to rent a small boring econobox on a weekly rate, the price can be ridiculously low.
Why is this possible? Are rental companies loosing money? It’s the miracle of the „unlimited miles”. Most rentals are used for very short business trips to and from airport, and those short trip renters who always fly effectively pay for the depreciation of the car on my long trips.

Fly!!! I never drive for business trips. In my opinion time, wear, possible rock chips or even worse are not worth the risk. I put my wheels on the freeway only a couple of times a year for trips with the family and actually the farthest place I went was just 100 miles away, but I understand the situation may be different where you live, here I am lucky because i can easily book high speed train and flights to any destination.
