My Civic is due for new engine and cabin air filters so I looked online and saw the below part numbers and retail prices:

17220-5AA-A00 - $21.61
80292-TBA-A11 - $19.98

I called a local Honda dealer and they had them in stock for the above prices so I stopped in to purchase instead of dealing with shipping and whatnot. When I got to the cashier to checkout, my total was $58! I looked at the invoice and each filter was listed at $27.50 + tax. I told them that those weren't the prices that I had been told and I even listed off the prices above. A couple of minutes later, they come back with an invoice for the correct prices.

Do dealers usually markup parts? Were they just trying to grab $18 from me?

Dealers do mark up prices. I don't work at a Honda dealer, but I work in parts for a dealership. I don't know the exact reasoning behind it except just for profit...

When I worked for a Chain garage back in day we marked up everything 100% from our cost. Eg $2 spark plug we charged $4 to the customer.
