17 Si, 33k miles, tuned since 10k’ish with Vit/TSP tunes, living in PA. I found this in my mail too, not too worried about it and tbh I’m happy that they extended the warranty. Once I get closer to 6 year mark I’ll start thinking about it again.

The whirling noise is kind of gone since I got rid of stock intake... I guess it amplifies the noise somewhat. It’s still there though, I think.

Just changed my winter oil and I couldn’t smell any gas. Looked like used oil too lol.

I think this is more likely just to cover Honda’s butt when defects shows up in every 100th Honda, than it is mass catastrophic problem. Paper and man hours + some $ to fix stuff is cheaper than class action lawsuit and bad press.

What I am worried though is the rear suspension. That **** sucks. I hope they’ll get it solved.

Got my letter today in South Carolina. 63,000 miles on my Si and BOOM, back under factory warranty. Thank-you Honda for four more years of unlimited mileage warranty. Sure its only the top end, but that is the most expensive part of the engine. I know that there are people with more mileage on their 10th gen than I have, and I haven't heard of any chronic problems yet. Have I missed something?

Received my letter today. I have a '17 with 20K. I've experienced a few bizarre events. Of late I've noticed that on a cold start it starts just fine, then after about 5-10 seconds it idles rough. Five seconds later it's fine again. I do think my oil smells like fuel, but my mechanic has never mentioned it. Could this be a misfire on cold start?

Also, a few months ago, while using only the battery to play the radio I received a series of error codes on the dash... one for the e-brake, the brake hold system, and a few others. It just cycled through the errors until I powered off the battery. When I started it up hours later to leave work it started slow, but ran fine. I also sound like a diesel truck when the A/C is on. This car is quirky. But I still love it.

What I didn't understand about the letters (got one for my 2018 Si and My Wife's 2017 EX-T) is if the warranty extends all the covered items under the factory 5/60,000mi warranty or just the listed items? It would seem the way it reads is that it extends the factory warranty to 6/unlimited and also includes the named items as possible failure items and items that can be reimbursed. Maybe I'm not reading it right, but that's what I read.

The bad part is that I got the new Civic for my wife under the idea that it'd be reliable... and I got my Si because I liked hers enough and have had good luck with my 2009 Si and 2004 S2000. Now I've kinda lost a little faith in Honda, but good on them for at least acknowledging the issue. Though I'm wondering if this has to do with the fuel dillution? My wife's car had that issue with the dealer oil-change oil 0W-20. After switching to Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE, it seems to not dillute as much, but it may also the engine being fully broken in now at 55,000mi. The wife drives about 25,000mi/year so it'd be nice if the warranty is unlimited mileage as she's pretty much done with the factory powertrain warranty.

It does not seem like anyone from California received this notice. If anyone from California has received this letter, let me know. I have gone thru my Honda online account where they post advisories, and nothing (owners.honda.com). Anyway I will continue to watch to see if I get one of these notices as well

Yeah I think we agree on this point for sure. We're just pointing out the bright side which is the fact they acknowledged the problem and are offering some sort of solution. At least we're not hung out to dry like Ford did with their Focus ST and Fiesta ST customers. Thank god for that bc that would really suck.
What happend with that platform?

Oh wow I thought they were only stopping the Focus RS and keeping the Fiesta and Focus ST? I just went to fords site and see they still offer the Fiesta ST but not the focus.
Correct, the Focus RS and ST are only offered as Crossovers (at least in my area), and the Fiesta is still available as the S, SE and the ST Line and ST Hatch (the performance model). The Fiesta has always been popular

So if I don’t have any engine lights or error codes on the console, then I don’t have anything to worry about? Is this something I should take the car in for?

I checked my data logs the other day and I have misfires on 1,3,4 cylinders. How would I even explain to honda that I suspect I have misfire issues without them knowing I have tuned the car or have a tool to log that? Also, my LTFT has been super super off (-15% - -20%) so this would mean my car is running very rich... and that is stated on the notice.

I definitely would like the whirring noise looked at though... do I really have to put my car back to stock??

I got the same notice at the same time. I do hear the “whirling” noise but only when the ac is on. Also, when the ac is on, at times it sounds like I’m shifting a big diesel bus or tractor trailer or something when shifting through the gears. I’m not sure if that’s the whirling noise Honda is referring to.

I’m not terribly disappointed in Honda. They have jumped head first into turbo engines and I think problems are to be expected. I’ve noticed Toyota is mainly still sticking with the tried and true na motors but gradually leaning to hybrid. Reliability is almost certainly the reason. Not that FI isn’t reliable, just don’t have all the years of refinement like the na motors.
Omg me too! That noise seems to have calmed down now that I have an exhaust system (or the loudness is drowning out the whirring noise).

It affects all 1.5t . They say it doesn't affect California because its weather is warmer . You could request the ac control unit and software update for oil dilution issue. 2016-2018 . If you guys want . I'll post all tsb's if needed
I’m in Vegas and got this in the mail yesterday so not sure why Cali would be exempted.

I hear the whirling noise on other non Si civics as the ac cuts on so unsure if that’s the noise or not. I just know my damn car sounds like a city bus with the ac on, as like the sound a bus makes as it accelerates from a stop. Even my daughter says the same.

I’m wondering if the times the noticeable drop in performance is related to this? As far as how to approach the dealer about the misfires, I’d just tell em you’re noticing decreased performance at times and the cars seems sluggish periodically...like it just isn’t running right. I’d think that would be enough. I would of course go back to the stock tune before going in though.

My theory is the low idle combined with 0w20 causing pressure drops in the head when it's super hot and ac is on.... combine that with the other oil dilution stuff and the misfire codes....i personally think anyone tuned would benefit from slightly increasing target idle.... that's my opinion

Although we are neighbors, most of California has mild weather all year round. At least where I am, we never get freezing temps and that may be why we are not affected by these issues. Anyway I'm going to call Honda customer service tomorrow and see if I can get any info out of them.

Makes me almost wish I had bought a Camry. Out of all the Toyotas I have owned (6), only my 2013 Sienna has been part of a recall, and that was for the airbag and the sliding door motor. Anyway hopefully I can get additional info tomorrow

When I did my last oil change the tech said they were going to to and "upgrade" to the "oil system." When my car was returned he said the last part was used on a car 15 minutes before my car was started. So, it will be replaced when I bring it in for my next oil change.

I received the infamous letter two or three days ago and plan on bringing it in tomorrow when I pop in for the oil change. If they change out a "oil system" part I will be sure to let everyone know.

After living through the mid-2000s GM brake debacle with my mother's car, I am very happy with how Honda is handling this. We put $3K in brake parts on that stupid G6 and the brakes still aren't right. GM never offered a damn thing, not even an admission that there might be an issue with the brakes. In my experience, there is NO comparison between how Honda handled this compared with GM.
