After our 500hp 10th Gen Civic SI ran an 11.07 pass we continued to push the car until we had a failure.
Our team mate Daelen walks through the engine failure and provides an in-depth look at which engine
components failed and whats in store for the next time we go to the track

Car has a new transmission in it and is ready to go back out to the track
and still try to get that 10 sec pass on a completely stock short block!

Here are some pictures of the carnage!
Gear inside the oil pump broke into pieces we found a small chunk in the oil pan
which we started to investigate further into the engine

The oil pump house also cracked as you can see in this picture

A slightly bent Rod and shattered gear ring...pretty phenominal for pushing that 500hp at the top. Good research for the CivicX owners going for that kind of power I suppose.
Really curious as to what the ECT2 temps are after your passes? 220*-225*F?

Finding a breaking point is good. Hopefully they can nail down a reliable limit for those owners looking to go FBO upgraded turbo but sticking with the stock block, head, and internals.

Crazy that you guys are able to rev the motor to 9000. Thank you for sharing, I love how involved you guys are with the community.

every picture loading for everyone? maybe becuase im at work.

Bent rod is culprit for sure.

Sounds like we need to look at a crank pulleys too.. not that the stock one is engineered for this type of vibration, but thats a pretty excessive failure considering ive ran motors like this, and worse, before with no oil pump failures, just lost power/compression.

I'm going to look into this picture issue and probably fire off an update.

We are leaning towards bent rod... the ONLY reason we don't just jump to that conclusion is that during 40+ passes, we NEVER lost any significant MPH... the lowest we saw was 126MPH versus the highest 130MPH... which... I think we would all anticipate, if a bent rod was the culprit, causing the issue, we would see some hurt engine passes.

IDK... could have all happened in an instant, too, I suppose. Either way, we are back in the mix with another stock bottom end... and another on the way... determined to break records with the stock bottom end AND learn where and what the failure points are for these 1.5t's

This was a great video to watch. It makes me wonder what the standard (non SI) 1.5t can handle with the known and not known engine differences. It certainly gives me complete peace of mind that my engine can certainly handle the +9 tune just fine.

I would love to see some sort of test between the SI and base 1.5t block .I wonder how much less hp the base block could handle vs the SI block

You could probably sign me up for an individual component failure test... something to confirm the reports of hardness and material differences between the internals of these engines...it would be very interesting. I will put it on the list of interesting ideas and see if it is something we can factor in the future. My guess is that the internals would still surprise people, in terms of longevity/strength.
