Civic AC heading for lawsuit?

novadrive

Let me ask - why would you buy a car if there was a high probability that you might have costly repairs within the first few years of ownership? Why should I give my money to someone that does sloppy design work?
It is more of the type of repair. I agree that this should not happen at all and the design is bad, but AC is a frill. Everyone has different uses for their car but to me if the AC goes it is not the end of the world because the car overall is still great.

Like I said it's all about how you use your car.

AC may not be essential to the operation of a car, but in this day & age I would not call it a frill. I cannot think of any car in recent years that does not have AC. Even the $12K Nissan Versa has AC standard. Vehicles have heaters for cold weather & AC for hot weather. I paid to be comfortable in both.

Until last year we had a 1989 Toyota Camry as one of our cars. That made it 29 years old & my wife had it since new. The body was in really great shape but a few mechanical issues were cropping up.

I put a can of Freon R12 in it when it was 24 years old. That was the first time it needed Freon.

Hearing all this talk of Civics having A/C problems when they're only 2 years old is kind of scary & doesn't give me a feeling of confidence for buying a Civic.
Not sure I would be too worried. People with problems on their cars quite often go to the internet to let the world know about it. Honda has sold around 1.2 million Civics in the last 3+ years or so in the US. With a 0.1% failure rate, you would have 1200 people potentially going online with their problem, which would seem like a lot of people having problems. That still gives you a 99.9% chance you won’t have a problem.

If you listened to Scotty, you wouldn't have this problem. Not listening to Scotty will cost you money. :D
The leaking condensers and compressors are a safety feature. After the precious refrigerant is all gone, you are safe from going up in flames or getting poisoned with HF in case of a wreck.

I just had my AC condenser replaced this weekend. My 17 Si is less than 2 years old, but has 38k miles on it. I couldn't get it replaced under factory warranty, but extended warranty covered it minus my $100 deductible. Total repair on my sheet showed around $850. i don't use my AC that much unless it is wicked hot out, or I am on the phone with my windows up. I am very concerned about this issue, because I don't want to have to replace this condenser every 2 years. Hopefully they come up with a better design for the failing condensers and make a TSB for it to be fixed. I would hope that a class-action suit gets setup. I only saw one for Odysseys and TSXs.

See, this is an issue right here. In a car with automatic climate control, you actually don't know how much you use the AC circuit. Even in the winter, the defrost cycle uses the AC to help dehumidify the air so that icing is not an issue. To which I will expand and say to the comments earlier about AC being a nice to have being a bit misguided of a thought in the modern era. Climate systems in cars are and have been about more than keeping you cool in the hot summer.

So ya, this is a bit of a serious issue long term for all of us, even if if you have had a fix that was fully or mostly covered. How long till something else or perhaps even the same part, fails. As nuts as it is, I almost think getting the extended warranty for me might be a real thing as I believe I still have till the end of my third year/60,000kms to get it added on. And I say it is nuts as it is giving more money to Honda over an issue or potential issue that shouldn't have to be mine to pay for.

I usually manually turn the ac off in the climate control menu.

There are always some that will do this but I can easily assume that most people will use the auto mode and the AC will be on and off as the car decides it needs to be.

I don’t usually use my ac unless its really hot outside. This past weekend was really hot in my area and used my ac. My ac blows warm air specially on driver side and a little cold on the passenger. My civic is due for an oil change and will bring this issue up.

That's probably the cause of your problem... you don't regularly use your A/C, and the seals dried out, and you have lost Refrigerant.

Different temperatures between driver side & Passenger side is a symptom of LOW refrigerant.

But apparently your 10th does..... not that your 8th has anything to do with your 10th having a issue.....
I told you what is causing your A/C to be unbalanced & blowing hot.
What you do with that information is up to you ... it's not my problem -- my 10th is working well... (probably because I use the A/C at least once a week, just to make sure the seals keep lubricated.)
