Any oil will do, even the cheap ones, it's only a Civic not a space shuttle.
Pretty much agree, I could use the factory dealership supplied oil & filter and would most likely never notice a difference, however, being retired from a career in maintaining medical equipment, I tend to be a tad OCD about maintenance, also tend to over-think and worry about minor things. I do a Blackstone Labs UOA at each oil change just to check on things in general. As I'm 71 and planning to drive this car for at least 7 years, it adds to my peace of mind to use premium products to maintain it. No, it's not a space shuttle, but it's MY Civic, and I enjoy taking it's care & maintenance to a somewhat higher level, relatively speaking, it's kind of a hobby.

The only reason for the lack of API certification could be issues with passing the tests or some stupid marketing exploit.

The API license costs $375 per month. And this is not a separate fee for each oil, but for the whole business. If they have the license for the cheaper oils, they could slap that starburst for free also on their most expensive product, provided it passes the tests. There is also a volume fee of less than one cent per gallon, (in other words, zero) but I guess they don't sell one million gallons per year, so they don't need to worry about this.

That, combined with multilevel marketing, and the very long life being the main selling point (the feature for which I care the least in an oil), puts the Amsoil company completely below my radar.

Ok, question ( actually more than one) After years of using Mobil1 & Mobil1 filters, I'm taking a serious look at Amzoil, specifically the Signature Series 0W-20 , the OEM 0W-20 and the Amzoil filter. My concern is that the Signature Series is not API Certified, the OEM does have the API sunburst and is SN/SN Plus rated, but, according to their website doesn't really compare to the Signature. Assuming that I choose the Signature and the Amzoil filter (which is undeniably better than the Mobil1 filter) what are the ramifications with warranty using an obviously superior, but non-API certified oil?. Is it mostly hype or is the Amzoil Signature substantially better than the Mobil1 EP? The filter is obviously made by the same vendor as the Amsoil, but the Amzoil is full synthetic media whereas the M1 is semi-synthetc. So please, convince me that the Signature 0W-20 and a Amzoil filter will really make a meaningful difference in engine life. I'm still planning on 7500-10K max intervals, or annually. Anyone have an informed opinion? I'd really appreciate it.
I'm currently at 36,500 on my 1.5T 6MT hatch and the car has seen nothing but amsoil (with the exception of the factory fill). Every single OCI has been followed by UOA. I've ran Amsoil SS 0w20 twice and currently on the 4th fill of SS 5w30. It is working just fine and UOA are coming back good. My last fill I ran for 8K which I feel like a safe bet. I have one more fill of Ams 5w30 sitting in the garage. i don't plan on buying more amsoil and will run M1 5w30 EP that i did buy with the rebate for 2$/qt. All in all, if you can afford a bit extra for oil - go for it. It really is a good oil and will certainly make you feel good about you taking extra care of your car (at least it did for me). Hope this helps

Penzoil previously had rebates so with that & sale price it is a clear winner for quality & price. Unfortunately I just bought 2 jugs of Mobil 1 since it was rediculously cheap with coupons & rebate & mobil 1 extended oil filter for my car.

Here is an independent who just finished up running an 5w30 oil playoff showdown on Youtube. Spoiler Alert, winner winner chicken dinner for Amsoil Signature Series but props to the second place oil, a huge win for Pennzoil too. According to this guy the hype is deserved. Dude even mailed them out a trophy for the win.

Not sure about the 0w20 but I am guessing similar results. Both are acceptable and recommended for the FK8 as per the manual.

Amsoil exceeds API certifications. Long story short, oil manufacturers must pay to have the certification displayed. Amsoil does not opt to do so, primarily because they assume you plan to operate outside of the recommended OCI parameters.

All that said, IF an oil quality issue were to come up (highly unlikely)... and Honda's investigation questioned the type of oil used, the lack of the API seal "could" work against you.
But Amsoil will pay for any damages caused be their oil in the event the dealer can prove it's the oil.

Email Honda and see what they say about using Amsoil in your car. I wouldn't worry about it.
