I gotta say, thank you! This has been entertaining to read. It’s like Love and Hip Hop on VH1 but with Type Rs.

A decrease in rotating mass will produce faster acceleration due to less inertia.
Dragsters have massive rear wheels/tires since they require maximum traction from a dead stop. Traction is more a bottleneck than the insane acceleration that they already have.
Having said that, I plan on keeping the stock 20s when I pick up my CTR. I like keeping things OEM and IMO they look good. Sure, there's room for improvement in performance but I don't plan on using the car for any serious competition.

Just got my R and bent a wheel within 500 miles from new. Pothole and not even a real bad one.

Not gonna bash the OEM wheels (they look good) but the 30-profile tires did worry me so changed out to 245/35/20 immediately for better rim protection. I’ll eventually change out to 18-inchers primarily for economic (cheaper tires, more selections) and aesthetics reasons. No track use for me as it’s primarily a DD and grocery hauler.

To the OP’s point, reasons people switch to aftermarket wheels: huge unsprung weight savings, cheaper tires, more comfortable ride, more tire options at that size.

I have ran OEM wheels for over 15k miles, in both summer and winter. I hit a pothole in the first year of ownership and blew a tire, cost over $300 to replace just the tire. I actually have a set of OEM wheels for both seasons. They are adequate, but to say they are superior is factually false.

Ok...off topic I guess...but as a mechanical engineer, I just gotta say that the OPs statements about wheel size vs energy are completely false.
Am I an expert? Yes. Yes, I am. :p
I think we all know the OP is full of nonsense, and has even admitted in this post that he is a Troll, posting to incite reactions.
Why do you guys keep feeding the Troll ??

Honda set the nurburgring record on the 20" wheels, did they not? They did use much better tires though.

I wouldn't wipe my butt with the factory tires. Absolute trash. And yes, I believe faster lap times can be set with smaller, lighter wheels- later braking, better cornering, faster acceleration.

For DD purposes and even spirited track day fun can be done on the OEM wheels... But records will not be set. For anyone serious about their lap times, smaller wheels are a must.

Honda OEM wheels have always been a compromise in one way or another. They've had some reputable brands make many of their wheels, like Enkei, but the wheels are still just cast constructed- not light, nor strong.

The wheel size/weight impact had never been more apparent to me than on my 1992 Civic Si hatchback, way back in the day. At a whopping 125hp and a curb weight under 2400lbs, any reduction at the wheels was hugely felt.

I went from the stock Steelie 14s, to stupid size 17s for a short bit, down to a flow formed 15" wheel and the difference from the 17 to 15 was incredible. You don't notice it nearly as much with the CTR as it has way more grunt and weight already as is. But you can still definitely feel it. I feel it is more noticeable when you go from big to small wheels, as opposed from small to big wheels.

So damn hilarious that noobs think just because thinner sidewalls mean better or quicker turn in. Noobs also don’t know what stiffer carcass means on tires with taller sidewalls and have less slip angles. In fact many R compound tires have very stiff carcass by design for this very purpose. Ever look at IndyCar or F1 car tires? Yeah huge sidewalls and carcasses that are very stiff.

18” wheels, stiffer carcass tires, wider contact patches all day every day and out run stock 20” fashion wheels and tires all day long! People need to understand Honda marketing just like all mfger marketing LOL!

I agree with all the reasons for switching to 18” mainly for better rubber selection. Me’s think and feel that the stock setup in contest to a 18” *38 offset wheel with the same exact rubber size compound and make would clock in slower times at a high speed track. All else equal exact STOCK set up

I dunno about you guys, but I'd take a mint 2001 Integra Type R, entirely unmodded and on stock wheels, over one with $4000 wheels and some mods.

Sure the wheels are boring, lame, heavy and nothing special whatsoever, but shiiiet... They're original to the car!!
