Greetings all!

A small back story, I used to own a 2014 Civic Si when I lived in Columbus Ohio, but I traded it in for a 2015 Jeep Cherokee when I moved to Miami in 2015. I feel comfortable now being able to drive a manual in this incredibly crazy traffic and I am looking to buy a Civic Type R.

I have a few questions:

I am wanting to add a few extras, body side molding, door guards etc, but as for interior options am I able to add lighting etc on my own after the fact or should I pay the dealer to do this? I would also want to upgrade the shifter to be wrapped in leather due to this insane Florida heat.

What price should I be able to expect? By this question I wonder what everyone else has paid? Have any of you had any luck adding extras for no charge into the out the door price? I have a guy who knows a broker that apparently has been able to do a great job for him and his friends on all sorts of car prices down here.

I am asking all of this because it seems like the Type R sells for around 31,000 USD in Canada. I would even consider buying the car in Canada and driving it all the way back to Miami. Especially to save thousands of dollars it would be worth it to me.

I am also torn because I am 36 and wonder if I should even be buying this car

Thoughts?

If you can buy the CTR for $31K i say go for it, I'm 44 YO and I just bought my CTR which I traded an 18 SI for it as well. Good luck with your purchase.

If you can find one for 31k, definitely go for it! I paid 34,200 and from what I’ve heard I am in the minority paying under MSRP. As for the age thing; don’t ever let that bother you! The CTR is a perfectly functional daily driver with plenty of space. Minus one seat haha.

you should be able to get it at msrp and possibly even slightly under by now. Cars been out for a while already.

as for buying it in canada and driving it back, if you do decide to go that route, iirc you are giving up your warranty since the car will be considered an imported in the states.

Oh wow I did not know that. Thank you for this information. That would NOT be worth it to save a few thousand.

Good info. Do you think I will have more negotiating room with the more options I add?

You should be able to negotiate the dealer installed stuff to a point, but they are, in my opinion, extremely over priced to begin with, so that’s up to you. As for the price of the car, I would look for one that has been sitting on a lot for awhile and see how it goes. Many dealers won’t budge much, but you can check the topic pertaining to the “nice” dealers and give it a shot. Don’t spend a cent over MSRP though. Also call and speak to them before you make a trip because many dealers don’t advertise that they’re marking the car up.

Thank you for this. I know many of the dealer options are over priced however, there is a convenience factor. Here is a list of the options I am considering:

Body Side Molding
$217

Door Edge Film
$42

Door Trim – Chrome
$275

Rear Bumper Applique
$62

Wheel Locks
$87

Cargo Tray
$114

Console Illumination
$250

Footwell Illumination – Red
$125

Illuminated Door Sill Trim
$290

Shift Knob
$199

Much of this would depend on how bright the lights are and how it looks. I am trying to scour the website here to see how bright they are. I also may not get the chrome door trim but I would be thinking about it.

Now I am pretty handy and may be able to install some of this after the fact as well... so that takes it into consideration. I also plan on trading in my current vehicle and putting 25-30k down (I am about 2k under water on my current vehicle)

You can find most of those much cheaper outside the dealership and then just pay for the install, if necessary, but I don’t know how much that would save you in the end.

I agree, I try to deal as little as possible with the dealership

I would target a car with as little on it as possible for as close to MSRP as possible

And if you are handy, just add on the pieces later, you can buy them for much cheaper away from a dealership

I am pretty handy honestly..... I just don't want to do the work. Mostly because I live in Florida (Miami) and it gets to 95 degrees out and can rain at any second without notice during the summer.... With the humidity it feels like 105 :(

I would do some research before even thinking about buying Canada. I don't think you can actually do that without a bunch of paperwork and import taxes, negating any savings.

Today was the day I pulled the trigger. After a few weeks of hunting, I finally found the Blue Type R I was looking for. I negotiated with quite a few dealers.... Honda of Aventura had the Blue one marked up 10k and I finally was able to get AutoMall of Miami Lakes to sell me a Grey Type R at MSRP no dealer mark up etc (They were aware I was going to be buying a few extras) Then Coral Springs AutoMall had a Blue Type R just arrive and I was able to get it at MSRP today.

I am a proud new Honda Civic Type R owner!

Congrats bro. Make sure to go easy the first 600 miles, for break in period.
