The photo below is a friends Type R, he purchased this car from the same dealer I purchased mine from approximately 2 months after I purchased mine (February 2019) as shown below (first photo), his caliper bracket has some gnarly surface rust while mine (second photo) does not. For some reason, his bracket is black, appears to be uncoated cast iron while mine appear to be coated silver? These cars have not been exposed to snow, salt or rain for that matter as they are both located in Central California and both have around 3k miles on them.

He isn't a member of the forum but is searching for answers for Honda claims this as normal, which has spiked my curiosity as well. Chances are, we will just sand them and repaint them, but wondering if anyone else has had this "normal" issue.

It's under warranty why waste your time? Then it will documented and there's no risk of them blaming you as the reason if something else in the vicinity has an issue.

Looks like they forgot the protective coating. I personally wouldn't consider that 'normal'. If it were my vehicle I would certainly approach the dealership to replace the caliper brackets, seeing as you have proof that they are not all rusting like that.

That doesn't look normal.
If it helps with your dealership, mine looks like the second picture which I believe is normal for this car.

My car has never seen rain let alone a hose for washing and I have surface rust on some bolts on the underside of the car. She just turned one year old one month ago too!

There is no way in heck that is "normal"... I daily mine through Michigan winters and have over 28,000 miles on it... No discoloration of any sort. I've even got my front brakes hot enough on XP8 to charbroil (literally blacken) CBC Disc Quiet glue... So if they say it's because you've heated your brakes up to much that's a bunch of BS ;)

Because as stated in the post, the dealership claims this as "normal" oxidation from being exposed to the elements and not under warranty.

You said “Honda claims” making no mention of a dealer. It wasn’t dealer specific for all I know you could’ve made a phone call to corporate.

If you were more concise there wouldn’t be room for misinterpretation.

Awesome. Yeah gotta do different dealers. My local dealer told me paint peeling off my calipers was normal wear and tear after trying to blame me for over heating the brakes and my car soap and so on. Opened 2 cases against them as the refused to change out the fuel cap as well under the TSB campaign. Then the dealer told Honda that the reason they didn't fix the fuel door was because they already did it last year??? um no. so yeah I am not sure what the issue is with some dealers not wanting to warranty work since they get paid for it.

So I went to different dealer and with in 5 mins was getting calipers and fuel door TSB done. Even that dealer said no idea why some dealers are such pains about warranty work. Dealers will tell you its Honda saying NO but through my experience with this and talking with Honda, its not Honda saying no. Honda explained its initially up to the dealer to accept or decline warranty work. If they are not sure on something then they get a district adjuster involved that makes the call on behalf of Honda but Honda themselves do not make the call. Even if you call Honda first the send it to the district person to make the call. But the initial choice to warranty work or not is the dealers and no idea why some say no to everything while others say yes to everything. so yeah if one says no just gotta go to another one.

I remember reading this thread, I am glad you were able to get the calipers replaced! I am worried mine soon will start to peel (like most cars with brembos it seems, haha!) and I will need to make a few different trips to the dealer. Unfortunately, my local dealer knows the car quite well and is aware I do track it... So driving it a few hours south to a different dealer might be my best option LOL

stunning QC!
.

He did purchase it after they announced the Swindon plant closure... Although that is probably not the case as to why the brackets weren't coated, it makes for a good joke as to why some of these cars have very odd issues

you really shouldn't have to take it somewhere else....I mean that was the main purpose of Honda engineering this car....for track racing. They've also advertised it as a track weapon...idk just sucks we have to fight dealers for shit like this.
