Hello CTR owners, I’m looking for advice. I put a deposit on CTR two Friday’s ago to pick the car up the next day. The dealership had the car advertised for just over $2k off MSRP. I test drove the car and enjoyed it. The manager came over and said they made a mistake on the price and would only honor it if I immediately purchased the car. I told the manager I was test driving other cars (GTI, Miata, Mustang GT, Camaro SS 1LE) and that I would make a decision later that night. Later that evening I put a deposit on the car, to only find out they sold it out from me the next day before I arrived at my 4:00pm scheduled time. The manager explained it was an honest mistake and would get me another one for the same price, including another $500 off. From my understanding, $2500 is pretty unheard of for a new CTR. I also enjoyed the GTI and the Miata. My wife said, why don’t you just get a new GTI and a new Miata instead of the CTR? Good thought.

A little background is in order. I have owned over 50 cars in the last 15 years. I get bored easy and trade up often. However, I need to stop this and just enjoy the car I get. I have owned a wide range of cars from a Lotus Elise S2000, Mustangs, GTOs, and several Miatas. I always modify my cars as I do enjoy working on them. So, do I go with just a CTR, or get two cars and get the GTI and the Miata?

CTR. Can’t go wrong with it. Still loving the car 8 months into ownership with no regrets.

CTR and a used 2016 ND Miata (cheap!). Different animals but both are fun to drive. Good luck!

Edit: misread, anything under MSRP is rare
Once you drive it you might consider dropping a wheel size or two.

Just got out of a Miata and into the R.
No comparison really, wait - hear me out.
Miata = great car but only a great car after you drop twice its value on upgrades to everything on it and you still have a pretty low HP car.
Civic R = great car straight out of the box
GTI = a VW is a beautiful thing and have owned many of them (still do in fact) but once things start going wrong, which they always will, say goodbye to some serious $$$$

I hate to say it but the last car I saw that was truly tearing up the track and I mean tearing it up was a new Camaro!

I would suggest to find one at or below MSRP. I love mine but I wouldn’t pay the mark up

Please elaborate on your "...dropping a wheel size or two." comment.
Would really appreciate it.
I'm just over in SC where the roads are pretty horrible.
The stock wheels and tires scare the hell out of me (but damn they do look good don't they?)
Hoping to swap the stock rubber for some R compounds on the stock wheels for track days and get a set of more road friendly tires and wheels for around town.

After 2 mistakes, I would trust everything this manager says. Did they tell you how long will it take them to get another one? I would shop around while waiting. Also, why GTI and Miata vs. 1 CTR? They're in the same price range. I had a GTI MK6. I loved it when I was concerned about its long term reliability.

I like the CTR but it's nice to have 2 cars too, especially if you are going to be modifying.
The '19 Miatas are actually not too slow either. I drove a ND miata and i was impressed. I have no experience with the GTI so i can't really comment on that.

You really can't go wrong with either choice. A RWD car will give an entirely different driving feel as i'm sure you already know. Although, they wouldn't really be in the same price range cause GTI + ND would be more expensive than 1 CTR...

I’m in GA on 18s with 265/35 tires (they look better than stock IMO). 20s look big on the car now. Got rid of the stock wheels. “Weekend”Daily and track (once already) my setup, don’t plan on having a second set unless I start driving it weekly.

To stay a bit on topic, the car is a great deal when bought at the right price. But with the stock wheels/tires aren’t the friendliest for “big trips” or daily driving. Sharp bumps cause instant paranoia. In addition the stock wheels are quite heavy. If I could only do one mod on the car it would be wheels.

$2500 off of MSRP? I'd have to see a receipt to believe it. Also, this dealer let you test drive a new CTR? Again, that is crazy, I would have never been willing to buy a CTR that had been test driven. Hard to believe the dealership saying they sold it to someone else after you test drove it. Then again, if they were asking under MSRP, I guess that makes sense, but still hard to believe. Folks still pay over MSRP on used CTRs (insert Carmax and Carvana here).

I, too was surprised they allowed me to test drive the car. It had 28 miles on it when I took it for a drive. The dealer attempted to find another one for me, but no other dealer was willing to trade. The dealer has one being made, in my color preference the week of July 1st and he expects it to arrive sixty to seventy days later. I have been offered the car for $34,052 plus tax, title and a $199 doc fee.

I do like the GTI and love the Miata. As I mentioned, I have owned a few. I hear the GTI’s clutch does not hold up once the car is tuned. I have researched tuned Type Rs and there doesn’t seem to be any issues.

The price offered is making the deal very tempting. I’m afraid I will be so nit picky with the Type R, I will be afraid to drive it anywhere. But man, did I enjoy driving the car. Tough decision. Go with two cars or one bad ass car?

Yeah, I know. The price difference between the two cars and the CTR is about 14k. But this is what the wife has proposed. Happy wife, happy life. I don’t bother questioning her reasoning. I don’t have the time or patience for it. Lol

If you are going to track it I would get a ND2 Miata. That’s going to be my next purchase. Throw on some Ohlins, Essex AP BBK, little other things here and there.

Yes, that’s my plan. I will get an ND2. I had a tuned ND1 with some other aftermarket suspension components.

If you end up not pulling the trigger on the CTR, I'm sure there are some folks browsing the forum who would gladly take your place for $2k+ under MSRP lol
