Sure don't. It's all hype and internet engineering.

Went from stock to 255/40-18 PS4S on et50 rims. No difference in torque steer in daily driving. Will track/autox in next few weeks and see if it is noticeable when pushing the car closer to the limit.

There is a noticeable fundamental difference in how the car rides, so much smoother on the 18s. Also the PS4S tires, with a bit more width, hook up much better in 2nd gear. Almost no wheel spin when warmed up.

Actually rides a bit too smoothly for me now, I keep it in R mode most of the time since changing wheels. Might change RMM to give the car a bit more character.

Definitely a noticeable difference for me. I'm dreading going back to my winter set again...

It would be helpful if people would list the wheel and tire specs they are using when responding.

why jack up the handling just for looks? just curious is this a juvinile attraction? not worth hacking up the car IMHO. the aggressive offsets doesn't appeal to me. poseur look. everyone I trust with their honest feedback have mentioned a very noticeable torque steer. I guess it really depends on your expectations and how critical you desire the handling to be. looks over function?

The article holds merit for several reasons:
  • Increased sidewall height = increased sidewall flex
  • Increased/decreased offset = increased likelihood for tramlining
  • Lighter wheels = less density = increased NVH (not that it matters to most enthusiasts)
Things to keep in mind if/when upgrading wheels.

Your friends should hit the gym if it’s very noticeable to them.

yup. everyone who runs aftermarket wheels gets it only for the looks. nevermind the increase in tire choices/size, lower cost of the tires, increase in tire width.

The article holds merit for several reasons:

  • Increased/decreased offset = increased likelihood for tramlining

if you are upgrading to a good 200TW tire, they will have a stiffer sidewall so the sidewall flex increase is negligible compared to the stock rubberbands.
lighter wheels = less density = increased NVH is true however, the increase in tire sidewall will negate all of that.

Reinforced sidewalls are more likely to offer a firmer ride and transmit increased NVH by design (compared to those of the same radius/height). Regardless of the compound, a typical 245/30 series tire is going to be 20-30% stiffer simply because there is .5-1" less sidewall from tread to rim. Some can be mitigated by (over) pressurization. But as physics tells us, any reinforcement on a vertical plane is only marginally effective against a horizontal force. :)

you are correct. a 245/30/20 will have a stiffer sidewall than a 265/35/18s. But it is not something that you would be concerned with as long as you are running an appropriate tire. Now, going from the stock 245/30/20 vs some all season 265/35s then yeah ... it's going to be pretty noticeable.

regarding NVH, even if a reinforced sidewall gives a firmer ride, a bigger sidewall will give you that cushion. a 30 series is bone jarring and gives basically no cushion so you feel everything. Just look at all the bent stock wheels. They just don't have anything to absorb and cushion the impact. I guess the summer tires will give off more road noise but the less harshness more than makes up for it.
