On a side note, I wonder whatever happened to that CA bill that proposed we end smog checks on new cars since it is essentially a big waste of $$$.
You only need to pay the "smog abatement fee" for the first 6 years of registration.

The dealer will fill out of the paperwork for CA DMV, including registration. There will be Limited Powers of Attorney you sign allowing them to file for you. There should be no need to walk into DMV or use a broker. PA even has a temporary paper license plate similar to the ones we need in CA for our freshly purchased cars.

How long ago did you buy out of state and need to get the smog check? I haven't received a notice that I must do the smog check. The car was officially smogged in PA, although I wouldn't be surprised if CA insists I get a baseline into their system.

it was back in Fall of 2016. I got it from the state of IL. The dealer was experienced and even told me about the process. Things might have changed over the past 30 months, but I indeed had two options---one is going to DMV which is a nightmare for us in Cali, two is going with a broker. At the broker, they even can issue license plate. Apparently, lots of people don't have AAA and still want to avoid a trip to DMV, therefore they go with brokers for registrations and related needs. AT the broker, I paid for the registrations and balance of the tax---for IL, they collect and forward the tax to CA DMV. However, the amount of tax that the dealer was supposed to collect was based on their local tax rate, which happens to be lower than CA.

I'm AAA member but they simply don't offer brand new vehicle purchases from out of state.

Back then, there was indeed a Temporary Plate and Registration issued by the State of IL that the dealer had put on for me. All i really cared was how to get my CA registrations done WITHOUT going to the DMV. LOL

You should be fine--my dealer calculated taxes for my zip code. It shows that I paid for CA taxes for my zip code on the sales order.

we had a similar measure in HI regarding our annual safety checks...
supporters believe the program keeps us "safe" but it's only as good as the shop performing the inspection and in actuality applicable for that day.
just another way for the states to make money off of us on new cars

I tried to purchase out-of-state but learned my credit union wouldn't finance for cars from PA. Going with another bank just didn't make sense at 6% APR. I got lucky and purchased in CA for MSRP.

One caution to Californians buying their CTRs from out of state: don't mod the car before Smog test and VIN verification at the DMV. Depending on the mod, you'll have to revert back to factory or risk being turned away at the smog station. To save time, just don't mod until it's completely registered in CA. And bring a copy of your buyer's order to the DMV for title and registration.

congrats! sounds like a pretty smooth transaction to me. You really can't avoid an employee quitting. Just be prepared this type of things happen and get ALL the info you can possibly get and maybe even have that person prepare for a backup. This happened to me before. Got a new car, but they didn't have the extra key fob. I waited a bit too long and the dealer switched owners and all of my info was "lost" I also find it they use that type of excuse. I had a lead to get MSRP and was even in line and paid my deposit. Then they said whoever agreed to that is no longer w/ the company..etc. Needless to say, i never got the car.
