Amazing, excellent, awesome. Then why does my shifter feel like this? Probably one of the worst I've ever owned.

I feel 1st to 2nd is a bit of a pain, but only during the first couple of miles. I have half a dozen stop signs before I would say it's nice and warm and then at the point 1st to 2nd isn't as the diagram above. All other shifts are buttery smooth. +1 though to ^

It feels better when the trans is warmed up and does get better with mileage. I agree with the above and I do pull it to the left in that 1-2 shift, just like pushing to the right in the 5-6 shift.

I'm not having any issues with mine...nearing 20k miles now.

It's not meant for hard shifts...like in FnF :D

Upgrade your shifter bushings
Change out the fluid to amsoil
If you can change the Clutch Master Cylinder
Problem solved

Upgrade the shifter cable bushings, the base bushings, and the shifter knob and it will feel like a different car.

I have not driven my car hard at all. I just find it incredible how shitty the shift feel is. Even reverse feels shitty. I actually have to clutch, reverse, clutch, reverse because the gear doesn't feel fully engaged on the first try. Even after warm up, driving for 20, 30 minutes nothing changes. So disappointed.

I appreciate the suggestions for bushings but how can this be? All the great reviews

It might just need a couple thousand miles to wear in. But I couldn’t wait so replaced it with a ebay “stainless steel heavy shift knob” and made a world of difference.

The entire not getting into gear will go away as the car breaks in.

From a start, I sometimes have the same issue. But, this was nothing to new to me since my WRX had it as well. You have shift it into another gear and shift back into reverse. No need to release clutch to get into the other gear though.

The OEM shifter was pretty good but a bit sloppy like you drawn. I switched over to the acuity fully adjustable short shifter and it feels a lot better. Every shift is on-point and feels great. No room for wiggles like you have drawn in red. Plus the shifter allows you to adjust height, throw, and gate size.

Is that a given? I had a '97 Civic Coupe with a manual transmission where the reverse was often vague in its engagement. I couldn't get in reverse possibly 25% of the time on the first try and had to try again until full engagement. While it was one of the only frustrating elements of the car, it was not super fun.

The transmission on the R feels very similar to my '97 Civic, and while I have yet to have any difficulties getting into Reverse, I can still feel that gear's general engagement vagueness on occasion and am left wondering if I am fully in the gear. I have also experienced a bit of the 2nd gear crunchiness, although I have not had any gear grinding issues, thankfully. It's just not always a smooth gear to shift into, which is unfortunate given its role in initial acceleration. 3rd, 4th, and 5th are much more fun as they are always exceptionally clean on the shift.

I guess my case is anecdotal, but I had issues getting into a few gears with my transmission when I first got it (1st, 4th, and reverse). After 10k miles, all those issues subsided. I've had the 2nd gear grind/scrape (1 -> 2 and 3 -> 2) but also have had it going into 3rd (4 -> 3). Each time the clutch release timing was iffy which could have contributed to the issue.

As for the getting into 2nd. When you say it's not smooth do you mean that shifting itself is janky or you get a jolt? For the jankyness if you shift from 1st to 2nd, keep the lever as left most as possible, it can help mitigate this a bit. If it's jolty (not a smooth transition), that's due to the rev hang the engine has (It's more pronounced if you have rev matching on); hold the clutch in a little longer.

The transition issues I have do not have anything to do with rev hang -- the shift itself is notchy/janky. This happens more often when the car is cold, but that is not the only occasion it occurs as I have had it happen while getting onto an on-ramp after having driven the car for 30+ minutes. The 2nd gear in this car just doesn't have as smooth of a shift as all other gears in the car with the exception of Reverse. I remember having mild issues like this in 2nd gear with my '97 Civic, but it was not a performance vehicle and I was never trying to shift quickly into 2nd gear for the most part. I can mitigate the issue for the most part by pulling hard to the left when I shift, but I can still feel the notchiness/bumpiness of the shift when doing so. In other words, I don't have any issues from a gear grinding perspective, but boy do I wish it felt better like all the other gear shifts do.
