5/24 - 5/25: First track day @ Sonoma Raceway

Finally got the OK from the wife to get out on track again. Signed up for two days with Speed SF at Sonoma Raceway. The goal for these track days was to get some seat time in the car so that I can get accustomed to everything.

Was running high intermediate group but ended up with lots and lots of traffic. Many of the guys did not belong in that group as they didn't seem like they even noticed me when i had been following them for two whole laps waiting for a point by. There were also a ton of BMW guys who just refused to point me by. One didn't even see me and almost ran into me mid corner. So that was exciting...

Regardless, I managed a 2.16 in my first session and subsequently dropped it down to 2.10 in the second. In the third session, I was able to hit my best time of the day at 2 minutes flat. Not bad as I wasn't trying to beat any PB's.

Impressions of the car so far are mostly positive. The CTR is ridiculously stable in corners and is able to carry speed throughout the entire track fairly well. One complaint I have about the car so far is that it has a bit of understeer. I think this might be attributed to the larger voltex wing I added. Not sure... but I would like a little bit more rotation on the car. A possible solution to this might be to stiffen the rear via a sway bar.

Another complaint that I have about the car is a lack of power. I later discovered this was probably because I was basically driving near redline the entire time (I come from an S2k and we like to keep the revs HIGH). A local member recommended that I try a higher gear but keep the rev range between 4 - 6.3k rpm.

My conclusion is that i think mid or low 1.50's can be achieved in this car by having more seat time and stiffening the rear. Other than that, the car is an absolute blast to drive on track. I can't wait to go back out again....

Nice little write up, what have you currently done to the suspension? Are you still running OEM springs and dampers?

Nothing suspension wise done. We've stiffened the chassis up via the roll cage, hasport rear lower mount, and the front tower strut bars but that's about it. Stock everything else.

I have the car kind of done in phases....

Phase 1 - address heat issues - Radiator, intercooler, turbo blanket, oil cooler...etc...
Phase 2 - Suspension - JRZ RS PRO 3, Eibach Sway bars, Spoon rigid collars, Hasport full mount, and more chassis reinforcement...
Phase 3 - Power - PRL DP / FP, Hondata.
Phase 4 - More aero

The car will be going back into the shop soon for phase 2 and 3. Trying to get some power on there cause I want to try to keep up with my friend's 992 GT3 in June. haha.

Chapter ??? - Laguna Pipes made.

Dropped the car off on Monday to get some laguna pipes made in preparation for my track day. Luckily the guys still had a set of my old pipes from my s2k so we were able to fab something up using the existing traps. Doesn't look pretty but it works.

Poor driving by the Black BMW 2 series. Do the marshalls not wave blue flags at slower cars in the US?

oohh trust me. They were waving them all day. That was just a few of my sessions. I was practically blocked in every session by someone. lol.

So frustrating, hopefully your next track day is a little clearer.

Do they just do session track days in the US or can you do open pit lane as well?

I have heard issues with just a rear wing change and no front splitter, major understeer as you experienced. Most people have trouble getting close to their stock setup lap times without a full setup. Might want to try going back to the stock rear wing until you add front aero.

Chapter 16 - JRZ RS PRO 3's, Hondata, PRL DP / FP, Eibach Sway Bars and more...

Sorry for the lack of updates guys but been really busy at work so a lot of the upgrades have been done at the shop.

Before I begin, I want to say thank you to the guys at Elite Performance. You guys went above and beyond to prep the car for this weekend. Insane. Some of them were working till 1:30 am just to make sure the car got back to me on time.

Ok. On with some of the upgrades we did this time...

The first major upgrade we did this time was the JRZ RS PRO 3's. Thank god I bought the quick disconnect kit which allowed us to mount the canisters inside the cabin and onto the roll cage. Much cleaner look and WAYYY easier to make adjustments. Can't wait to test these babies out this weekend.

The second upgrade we did was actually the OS Gilken LSD. We had to drop the entire transmission just to get this installed so to say it was a pain in the ass is sort of an understatement. Since we had everything out. We actually installed the Eibach front sway bars, PRL dp / fp, HASPORT full motor mounts and Hondata.

We had a slight issue with the Eibach front sway bars. They don't tell you this but if you intend to use the oem end link, it actually hits the new sway bar. Kind of a dumb design but my guys at Elite thankfully designed a temporary work around. Still a pain in the ass though and feels rather shady of Eibach to do this (they've designed it so that you essentially HAVE TO buy aftermarket end links).

Alignment.

Once I got the car back into my hands. It was up to me to install another key piece to the puzzle. Full carbon Teknocraft T2 seats.

Needless to say, the car feels like a completely different vehicle at this point. We'll be putting a car through its paces this sunday, on June 16th at Laguna, so I'll be reporting back after then about my opinions on the mods done so far.

Nice prep. Will it be street-legal when you’re done? Meaning are you using a trailer to transport it to the track?

Regarding Eibach sway bar, is it possible that it was designed not to rub on stock ride height?

Hello all. I am new to your forum. I look forward to all the information on Honda Civic’s. I just purchased a 2016 touring coupe. I would like to add a winged rear spoiler. Has anyone had any experience with OEM spoilers? The particular spoiler I am looking at is made by DAWN.
If anyone has any experience I would appreciate it.

Thanks

You're probably right. Eibach probably designed it not to rub on stock height. Just kind of an annoying thing for it to be rub the moment you drop it a bit. Regardless, end links are ordered and en route.

The car is still technically still street legal though I probably won't be driving it on the street much. I'm actually in the process of trying to buy a trailer. Gonna hang out with some of the shop guys tomorrow and pick their brains about what trailers they would recommend. haha.
