Civic X community! I am starting down the road of my own type r clutch retrofit. I have gathered parts and will do my best to post pictures of my progress along the way. The goal is to make anything learned public knowledge and gather any advice from the group as I go.
I bought a used clutch/flywheel/pressure plate from eBay. I was hesitant but the parts were advertised to be off a totaled car with ~800 miles on it. I got a used OEM 1.5t flywheel from a member on the forum that I will use as my doner for the starter ring.
At first glance seems as though the overall diameter between the two flywheels (not including the starter ring) is pretty close. The ID of the pilot bearing is definitely smaller; as my k20 clutch alignment tool does not fit. (But does fit in the oem 1.5t flywheel)
The first step will be to grind the welds off the oem starter ring and get it removed. I will probably start by heating it and using some diy videos from YouTube.
Pics so far:
Updates!!
Got the ring gears off today! To remove the 1.5t I was able to use a dremel to cut the welds that hold the ring gear on. Next I heated with propane and used a pry bar to pop the gear off.
The type r was a different story. We tried the same method with propane to heat the ring gear, not enough heat. Next tried an acetylene torch, too much heat. I was worried about warping the flywheel. So then we used dry ice to freeze the center, this worked. We used a hydraulic press to press the flywheel down and out. Just going a little at a time working our way around the flywheel until it was off.
Things to do:
•use surface grinder to clean up 1.5t ring gear
•make a bushing to put the oem pilot bearing in the center of the ctr flywheel
•get oem ring gear on the ctr flywheel, not sure if I can do this by heating/cooling or if I will need to take the OD if the ctr flywheel down a bit. We shall see!
